An interesting beer that tasted like a cross between the advertised Belgian strong ale and a regular double/imperial IPA. Well balanced with enough bite to leave you in no doubt you’d be walking home if you had another.

3.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Meow in Wellington. A big 10% beer like we brew in America. Finally found a big beer in New Zealand. This beer has a rather mild aroma but in all fairness it should have been served in a snifter instead of a half pint. Flavor is malty with a nice sweetness balance. Alcohol is present and almost has a barrel aged bourbon flavor even though I don’t believe it us barrel aged. Color is deep amber and poured clear and not hazed. Enjoyable!

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: JUL 4, 2012 Monkey Puzzle? More like muddle puddle to look at. Not that I wish to denigrate the efforts of the fine people at the Mussel Inn, but this was not a good looking beer. It was good smelling though with aromas of marmalade, carob (I hate carob), cocoa and stewed apricots. This was evident in the flavour, of which there was shitloads, along with the distinct warming alcohols that let you know that you’d better not be contemplating driving after this one. The lingering finish was interrupted by my learned off-sider who wanted me to try their heat rash chilli beer. Ah well, I’ll just have to try again tomorrow.

Bottle from beerstore.co.nz.
Bright orange in colour with thin white head, which disappeared quickly. Big malt aroma. Spicey nutmeg/honey flavour that lingers in mouth for ages.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at Beervana 2008. Pours cloudy amber. Aroma is yeasty with some hop & sweetness. Explodes with flavours, sweet beginnings, then some milk chocolate leading into caramel, hops remain throughout in the background. The bitterness breaks through the sweetness to make this a really balanced strong flavoured dangerously drinkable beer.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottled at the inn. Pours a hazy amber with no head. Quite sweet with a bit of late bitterness. Sweet aromas of toffee, dates pears and port (with a bit of cork). Also hints of nutmeg. Full bodied. Sticky and slightly alcoholic mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. Dry and sweet finish.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tasted 31/01/2008. Bottle direct from the brewery, courtesy of Papsoe. Deep hazy gold with a creamy lacy head. Bready malts, a little lilac, all spice, alcohol and lacquer. Sweet malty goodness, up front in the mouth, gives way to more complex fruity notes of orange and raisin - with a hint dessert riesling through the back and on the palate. Alcohol is warming but never hot. Resiny notes come through in the finish. Low bitterness. Weighty, lowly carbonated.
Excellent beer in the making, just let down slightly by the lacquer-like note on the nose.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: FEB 19, 2008 (Bottle 33 cl) Danish beer bottle. Slightly hazy amber golden with a creamy, off-white head. Aroma of yeast, sherry and alcohol. Very full-bodied, a little low in carbonation with extremely complex fruit notes with plenty of Belgian esters and a little yeastiness. Very subdued bitterness. Somehow it appears as if they cannot really do anything wrong at The Mussel Inn. 310108
