A delicate black saison. This beer is using roasted rye and roasted wheat, which means complex dark fruit, chocolate and coffee notes without the characteristic bitterness of many black malts. Our house saison yeast lends its own fruit character and dry wine-like flavor.

3/22/14. Draft at Fullsteam. Pours with a one finger head the dissipates fast. Very dark going on black. Strong roasty malts with hops deep behind the malt. Saison yeast lends interesting finish. Not sure I'd call it wine. Definitely somewhat an acquired taste. Interesting. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: MAY 2, 2014 Im never sure what the goal is with black saisons Porter like? Dunkel? This has dark malt flavors like coffee and chocolate mixed with funky, peppery flavors. Plus some red wine and oak. Not bad, but some of the roasty flavors seem a little out of place... Re-rate, 05/02/14 - The roasty notes in this batch are much more subdued. Fruitier and lighter. Much more enjoyable.

On tap at Beer Study, Chapel Hill. Nice, effervescent dark brown pour with a firm, medium head. Slightly astringent notes in the nose, sharp and bitter herbs along with dark chocolate malts and mild vinous qualities. To me, it came across almost more like a modified schwarzbier - perhaps with some additional spice and yeast added - than a black saison, since the characteristics I associate with that style tended to be a bit muted, in favor of mild char and vinous flavors. Not bad, but seems like its just started down the path of self-realization.

Growler. Pours a near-black color with a moderate off-white head. Nose has some sour notes with hints of licorice in there. Taste is a bit sour with some of the licorice elements. Odd.

Blackish brown with a light tan head. Nose is fairly dry, light roast, oats, bakers chocolate, light pepper. Flavor is similar, very easy drinking, could maybe use more saison yeast but its tasty. Pretty well done. :)
