I’m never sure what the goal is with black saisons Porter like? Dunkel? This has dark malt flavors like coffee and chocolate mixed with funky, peppery flavors. Plus some red wine and oak. Not bad, but some of the roasty flavors seem a little out of place...

Beer Study. Clean soft black with one finger of tan head. Roasty nose, burnt popcorn and toasted grain. Some cracked pepper and earthy/yeasty notes. Medium light bodied.

On tap at Beer Study, Chapel Hill. Nice, effervescent dark brown pour with a firm, medium head. Slightly astringent notes in the nose, sharp and bitter herbs along with dark chocolate malts and mild vinous qualities. To me, it came across almost more like a modified schwarzbier - perhaps with some additional spice and yeast added - than a black saison, since the characteristics I associate with that style tended to be a bit muted, in favor of mild char and vinous flavors. Not bad, but seems like it’s just started down the path of self-realization.

Growler. Pours a near-black color with a moderate off-white head. Nose has some sour notes with hints of licorice in there. Taste is a bit sour with some of the licorice elements. Odd.

Blackish brown with a light tan head. Nose is fairly dry, light roast, oats, bakers chocolate, light pepper. Flavor is similar, very easy drinking, could maybe use more saison yeast but its tasty. Pretty well done. :)
