Mystic Descendant is a beer descended from the cultural history of the Boston harbor area. A dry Irish stout meets an English porter and is then fermented in the fermentorium with our saison yeast with a touch of the ubiquitous ingredient from the area’s past: molasses. The result is a uniqe beer; it has more dark fruit than a porter and less roast than a traditional stout, while having a different ester profile than a Belgian stout. We thus dubbed our recipe a Suffolk Dark Ale, as an homage to our immigrant ancestors.

Tap. Pours deep brown with a lasting tan head. Bread and esthers on the nose. Drinks smoothly with a mild hop bite on the back of the tongue. Tastes of bread with a touch of smoke. Finishes very nicely.

Bottle at home - shared with Mette. Black - offwhite head. Burned malts. Dryness. Light soapy notes. Spicy yeasty notes. Ryebread. Roasted notes. Herbal. Light burned sugary notes. A bit too yeasty....

Bottle. Pours a clear mahogany brown body with a large frothy light brown head that left lots of lace. The nose is a mix of light roast, lightly sweet molasses, dark fruits, and an interesting yeast influence. The flavor is more stout than anything, but it’s clearly not a traditional interpretation of the style. There’s a nice combo of slightly sweet molasses and dark fruit that doesn’t really fit the style for sure. Some porter like chocolate notes, but the thing that separates this beer from either style is the unique choice of the Saison yeast. Light to medium bodied with a good deal of fizzy active carbonation. Interesting beer for sure, not exactly what to call it, but it drinks pretty good.

2013-08-16. Very dark brown body headless. 3+ Aroma has an odd earthy malt character that I do not entirely care for. 6+ Flavour is similar, with a dry dusty earthy malt. 6+ Average bodied palate. Just okay. Not sure if it is a bit old/off or if this is what was intended, but I was not enamoured of it.. Bottle at Campground Brewdown.

Bottle that I took to Campground Brewdown 2. Pours a hazed brown with a thin beige to tan head. Light paper, bitter cocoa, chocolate, soft musk and faint roast. Cocoa, sweet and lightly funky, more paper, yeast and light cocoa. Tasty enough.

sample at The Festival, interesting beer. dark raisiny fruits, chocolate, roasted maltiness with a carbonation that i dont usually associate with the flavors of a stout. touch of fruity yeast makes a pretty cool beer. nice

Bottle, from Luke’s Liquors. Good aroma, sweet, roasty. Molasses, chocolate, little clove. Dark orange brown color, big head, ok lace. Sweet flavor. Medium body, smooth creamy mouthfeel, bittersweet finish. Pretty nice. Flavor best part good mix of the molasses, chocolate and yeast. Aroma just a tad less interseting. Good stuff overall
