COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A tribute to the history and stature of the famous Somerville landmark, ‘Old Powderhouse Wheat Wine’ features a varietal of hard, red winter wheat that was grown at Four Star Farms in Northfield, MA and malted by Valley Malt in Hadley, MA. Praised by artisanal bakers, the flavors contributed by this hardy grain are earthy and complex helping to create a robust and powerful beer worthy of its name and the history to which it pays homage. For hops, only domestic varieties were used for ‘Old Powderhouse,’ combining perfectly with the rich flavors in the wheat for a bright and wonderfully aromatic beer reminiscent of fresh, ripe fruit. On the dry side for a beer of its strength and style, ‘Old Powderhouse’ is remarkably drinkable at 11% ABV with only subtle hints of alcohol coming through the fruity bouquet during the finish. In celebration of the change in season, of new growth, and of the land we call home, we are pleased to offer ‘Old Powderhouse Wheat Wine’ for release throughout the state of Massachusetts this Spring."

GBBF. Very hazy amber beer, little pale tan head. Smooth palate. Mild superfine carbonation. Sweetish malt with a little lactose. Very mild alcohol spice. Mild dried fruits. Smooth dry finish. Well joined up if somewhat dry Barleywine.

Draft sample at the brewery. Pours clear gold with a bubbly, white head. This is a big boy. Definitely some alcohol kick, a bit of honey, rich bread. Punchy. Full bodied with fine carbonation; and oily. Warming finish with bready malts, ripe fruits, booze and mild caramel. Tasty but perhaps a bit too bold.

(750ml bottle) Pours a clear golden body with a small off-white head. Aroma of wheat, hay, and roasted grain. Flavor of toasted wheat, caramel, light fruitiness, and cardboard.

Amber pour with a white head. The aroma has some wheat, orange and biscuit malt notes. The flavor is full of wheat, pine, orange, alcohol and oak. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Pours hazy amber into a snifter. White head with little retention recedes to hug rim leaving no lacing. Sweet toasted caramel aromas. Full with toffee and butterscotch upfront, turning hot in the lasting caramel finish. Quite sweet and hot.

750ml bottle (batch 002) in a tulip. Pours deep amber with an off-white head. Aroma of deep caramel and toffee malts, a lot of wheat, some spicy yeast, light bitterness, and hints of alcohol. Flavor the same with a nice blend. Smoother texture. A solid beer, but just not my favorite style.

Bottle @ a recent bottle share... Poured deep golden/orange with a thick forming head. This was an awesome wheat wine. Smooth and not overly boozy with vanilla and earthy wheatened malt sweetness. Dark, toasted sweetness too. Not bitter or boozy at all.

Batch 002 bottled about 2011. Clear amber/ red hue. No head. Aroma is dark fruit, sugar candy, plum and dates. I LoVE my barely wines slightly oxidized. The flavor is smooth and sweet with a mild sugary hint in the finish. ABV is nowhere to be found with a slick mouthfeel. A nice treat split with friends.

(2011 vintage) Crimson pour, not much head. Nose has a dessert wine, creamy caramel and sweet corn with a touch of whiskey. Sweet, really refined taste. You get this oxidized tongue coating brandy or scotch. Mild burn at the finish. touch of rice and really sweet with a tough olive oil.
