4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours gold with a beautiful halo of foam with rocky little islands. Aroma is funky and odd- in a good way: bret funk, manure, soil, floral notes, and dust. Flavor is initially pilsner malt whcih quickly warms into mild funk, burlap, Gruyere, dandelions, and black pepper. Very interesting take on the style, less spicy and more hoppy than most. Quite nice.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pretty much as advertised: you can definitely taste the pilsner in it, but the Saison flavors rob the beer of the crispness I enjoy in a good pilsner without achieving the complexity of a good Saison. A bit muddled.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sampled April 2014
A steady pour into my large Tripel Karmeliet tulip producs a three-finger thick, pale tan colored head; as the head slowly subsides it forms a structural, mesa like foam sculpture and leaves lots of foamy lacing on the sides of my glass. The beer is a light amber color that shows a lightly hazed, pale amber tinged, golden hue when held up to the light. The aroma is lightly tart, with a lemon zest like hop character, lightly herbal like, and with a pale, sun baked grain character and a touch of straw like notes towards the finish. There is a solid fermentation character and spiciness to the nose that contributes bits of clove, earthy, not really coriander spice notes, bits of pepper, musty cellar notes, and, an at times, expressive fruit character that leans towards ripe pear.
The beer is light bodied and dry, and has nice herbal, and hay like flavors up front, and is backed by a musty, yeast driven, earthy spiciness in the finish. The beer finishes with a biting, though not aggressive bitterness, as well as a bit of herbal, grassy hop character. Linger notes of straw, pale grain husk notes, some chewy pale cracker like notes all add some extra dimension to this beer. Really though the dominant character to this beer is the yeast / fermentation character; musty, a bit spicy (pepper), fruity with notes of pear, a touch of tart apple. Light citrus notes leans towards lemon zest, some grassy, and slightly herbal notes form the hop character here. There is a nice clove like character here that is not overly dominant, a definite musty character, earthy phenolic notes, and a bit of peppery, not quite plastic or medicinal notes.
This is a nice example of a Saison. I like that there was a characterful use of a yeast here; the increasingly ubiquitious, French Saison yeast is a bit too bland, and I am glad to see that this beer has not gone the same direction.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
One Mile House, NYC tap: Pours hazy golden with a white head. Aroma is lightly fruity, a bit funky, somewhat spicy. Basically, all of the saison things are there in good measure, but never excessive. Taste is much the same. Lightly sweet. Somewhat spicy. Mildly hoppy. I liked it. True to form.
