JoeTheYounger (218), California, USA Oct 13, 2009 My #200 rating, and what a good beer to have. Bottle from mspindler. Poured a dark dark horizon brown color with no head. Aroma of Brandy, figs, dark roasted fruits, raisins, alcohol. Taste of sweet prunes, roasted coffee, toffee, very strong and well balanced. Low carbonation thats thick and coats the glass. Overall very very good. I think this one was a bit better than Dark Horizon 2nd edition. DuffManSW (283), Riverside, California, USA Oct 11, 2009 Bottle shared by mspindler...Pours black with no head.. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, roasted malts and booze... Flavor is dark chocolate, coffee, and toffee with a lot of alcohol left still... Thick with low carbonation.. Good stuff. BückDich (4785), McCall, Idaho, USA Oct 5, 2009 Bottle: Pitch black, nice tan head, spotty lacing. Nose of dark earthy oak and bourbon, savory soy and molasses. "Someone tripped on the cellar steps to an all wood wine cellar with a bottle of bourbon in their hand." Vanilla and light alcohol, the flavor is pine, wood, resin, hops, alcohol, molasses, marinade, gin, muddled wood, coffee, grinder and bourbon. Awesome. polomagnifico (532), Saginaw, Michigan, USA Sep 21, 2009 Bottle #01776 from ygtbsm94, thanks a million man. The last unique brew from my cellar and marking the end of my beer rating quest. Aroma has fruity notes of molasses, caramel, red wine, oak, coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malts. Pitch black hue with a small creamy tan head that lingered around the edges quite nicely and left little lace. Flavor is sweet with some licorice coming forward then transistions to a slight cloying bitterness. Palate is very full bodied and oily soft with a noticable alcohol burn. Overall a lovely work of art. Wonderfully complex nose with a classic Imp stout appearance. Flavor is very sweet and noticeably bitter but the alcohol is felt more than smell or tasted. The palate is extreme but still quite pleasent. The coffee aspect is not very apparent thank goodness. A truly lovely brew. A great brew to mark the end of this great hobby. I will miss these moments but this journey has come to an end. Bravo Nøgne Ø! Bravo! Geokkjer (256), Kristiansand, Norway Sep 20, 2009 Rating # 100.Shared by Yngwie, thanks a lot. What can one say about this beer that hasn’t already been said.It is the kind of beer that inspires poetry from ratebeerians all over the world. That being said ,it deserves it too.Black as the night with a beige/tan head.Wonderful aroma of roasted grains ,coffee ,licorice, molasses and silky alcohol.Smooth,as hell, and velvety on the tongue.Warm ,sweet roasted ,coffee ,dark chocolate ,nutty. And probably lots more .I am lost for words .Truly amazing harrisoni (6703), Ashford, Kent, England Sep 11, 2009 Bottle bought back at GBBF 2007, kept for 2 years and drunk whilst watching Beethoven 9 on the BBC Proms. Black as night and a dark tan head. Man that has an incredible hit of choc and coffee coming off it. Yes some alcohol heat too, which is only to be expected. Beautiful wonderous aroma. I mean the mouthfeel has some velvet and some graininess and this big attack of warming heat. And then a swallow that coats the throat with espresso coffee before the heat kicks in. But the alcohol is more like a ginger kick that a boozy rush and this coffee liquer creaminess soothes it all down anyway. It has definitely mellowed from 2 years ago when I first tried it. Less alcohol harsh and way more coffee. Wow that is a bit fiery isn’t it? But it is almost like being coated in full on espresso creamy ice cream. Christ on a stick that’s good. You know what the booziness dies down a bit and leaves you with an exquisite feeling of joy, or is that the Beethoven?? Difficult to say. Certainly a massive, epic beer which did improve with age, no doubt. I still have the Mikkeller Weasel to rate and on previous samples I would say that is better than this, but this is still amazing in its assault on the senses. Pretty good, but yes just a bit too boozy maybe. TET (226), Finland Aug 21, 2009 About two years old bottle # 04684 that has been storaged about 16 celcius degrees. Beer is black with very small, dark brown head. Aroma is very strong, full and intense, but still very balanced and temptating. Lot of liquirice, quite strong alcohol nuancee, roasted malts and piny hops. Flavour is practically perfect: soft liquirice, strong coffee, lot of sweetness and hops and this beer warmer you nicely in the end. And unbelievable but true, alcohol is gone even that was quite strongly present in the aroma. Wine-like, sweet, flexible and very nice to drink. Strong, dominating and overall beer with admirable balance, just unbelievable... Pastor (509), Maine, USA Aug 19, 2009 I stopped by the Loins Pride on the way through for vacation and I happen to have my bottle in my cooler to drink this week. I showed my teen-agers the price on the bottle list they were charging for this bottle $85.00 and then later I showed them my bottle. They thought Dad was living large LOL
I poured my numbered bottle into my snifter and it produced a wonderful two-finger tan colored head that went to a thick lace. The body color was a nice typical black colored stout with tan colored highlights
I must say that this brew smelled fantastic the fresh coffee and chocolate aroma was over the top. All of the big ass boozyness that I had gotten from a sample some years ago was gone. This brew surely has come into it’s own. When the teens saw me crack this one they asked for a sip. They wanted to live life large too. My youngest summed up the flavor profile by saying it reminded her of a mocha frapachino. It really had some nice sweet chocolate notes with the coffee coming up in the finish. Again it had no alcohol hotness at all as I sipped away at this. It had a full feel to in my mouth with some great carbonation for such a big brew with some age on it.
Let me now to sum up the drikability on this fantastic brew. I poured the rest of the bomber into an insulated coffee mug and proceeded to make my way to the beach (there was a no glass rule) I sat in my lounge chair and kept sipping away at this till it was gone. It was one of the best beer drinking experiences I have ever had. Would I pay $85 to do it again? I don’t think so, but I did gab another second edition while they were fresh. Here’s to hoping for the best.
Oh yea I did have one hell of a buzz as the night went on, after finishing the bomber myself. Don’t plan on doing much but chilling if you are going to tackle one of these alone.
