Ughsmash (2835), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Dec 17, 2007 Many thanks to Mike for breaking out this bad boy! Poured black with light brown edges and just a touch of head sticking around. The aroma had lots of dark chocolate and molasses with drier caramel and boozy pine accents.. more chocolate as it warmed up.. warm, sweet, and quite delightful! The flavor had lots of well-roasted sweeter chocolates and deeper black malts with more boozy chocolatey sweetness behind.. picked up some molasses on the back-end along with simple and alcohol sugars.. long, warm chocolatey finish. Thick on the palate and hot, but certainly not more than expected considering the ABV.. sticky and a little raw on the finish.
Retorp (2148), Tampa, Florida, USA Jul 18, 2008 Courtesy of Quake1028. The aroma starts with coffee, chocolate, lots of alcohol, fudge and then more wafting fumes of alcohol tinged with hints of stewed dark fruits. The body is a full on black and holds a thin mocha brown head. The firs sip reveals dark chocolate, throat burning alcohol, esspresso, light cocoa and some herbal notes. Dark fruits including blueberry and cooked dark cherries appear and become more concentrated as this warms. The flavor is VERY concentrated. But, while good I wasn’t as wowed as I’d hoped to be. anders37 (2506), Malmö, Sweden Jul 12, 2008 Bottle. Pours a black color with a msall tan head. Roasted malty brown sugar aroma with hints of chocolate and licorice. Warming sweetish spicy roasted malty licorice and coffee flavor with hints of chocolate. Sweetish malty roasted finish with some hoppy hints. SuzyGreenberg (799), Seattle, Washington, USA Jul 10, 2008 bottle #1613 - enjoyed the same evening as Bell’s Expedition and at 16%, passed out shortly after...haha; jet black with tan head; aromas very sweet and strong; lots of chocolate and alcohol very obvious; has a sweet sharpness to it, similar to a red wine; soy and fruit in the flavors; velvety texture numbs your mouth; rich coffee and very rich; such a beer big, but still reasonable drinkable; made the Expedition seem like a light beer; coffee flavors underwhelming compared to something like Peche Mortel, but still a very impressive and bold brew BlackForestCO (479), Fort Collins and Black Forest, Colorado, USA Jul 7, 2008 Bottle shared by Crosling, thanks Nick. Poured a deep brown/black color with a thin tan head that quickly receded to nothing. Aroma of light chocolate and overpowering anise and black licorice. Lightly sweet, sharp hot malt taste with some light smokiness leading into a lightly vinuous flavor that ends with more smoke and light black licorice undertones. Smooth, moderately slick on the palate. I can see how someone could really like this, I am just not a big fan of the flavors that are present in this brew. weaselkenievil (295), Cheshire, England Jul 7, 2008 A privilged gift from Mes. Good work there mate. The beer of crazy drunken gods. Rich and heavy but smooth. And gets you away with a mixer. I feel smarter and more attractive by the sip. It’s trong obviously but you’d never guess 16%. Great beer, I’d have this over and over if I could get it easier. Madness in a bottle.
