marchcow (467), Coralville, Iowa, USA Dec 13, 2007 Sweet malty aroma. Dark, dark brown with dark brown head. Very good flavor changes, complex. Dark Licorice, thick and syrupy. Sweet, smoky, and rich and bitter mix. Very good overall. Thanks to Iowa Herkeye for this one.
BlackForestCO (477), Fort Collins and Black Forest, Colorado, USA Jul 7, 2008 Bottle shared by Crosling, thanks Nick. Poured a deep brown/black color with a thin tan head that quickly receded to nothing. Aroma of light chocolate and overpowering anise and black licorice. Lightly sweet, sharp hot malt taste with some light smokiness leading into a lightly vinuous flavor that ends with more smoke and light black licorice undertones. Smooth, moderately slick on the palate. I can see how someone could really like this, I am just not a big fan of the flavors that are present in this brew. weaselkenievil (272), Cheshire, England Jul 7, 2008 A privilged gift from Mes. Good work there mate. The beer of crazy drunken gods. Rich and heavy but smooth. And gets you away with a mixer. I feel smarter and more attractive by the sip. It’s trong obviously but you’d never guess 16%. Great beer, I’d have this over and over if I could get it easier. Madness in a bottle. Mmmmmmmmmmm............................ BOLTZ7555 (402), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Jul 2, 2008 Rating #400!!! Bottle 1795 acquired via trade with acrdz...thanks Mike!!! Wow...an extremely aggressive, high-octane version of an Imperial Stout. Pitch black with a cocoa colored head that stuck with the beer but left just a syrupy coating on the inside of the glass. Aroma was pungent chocolate, toffee, toasted malt, licorice, and alcohol. The flavor was almost eye watering...strong Starbucks notes, bitter Godiva chocolate, black licorice, and dark fruit. Put a flame to my lips and I would surely ignite. Drop this from warplanes, disinfect an open wound, or fill up your car...this is some powerful stuff!!! Good but not as balanced and drinkable as others in the class. Ethereal (693), London, Greater London, England Jul 2, 2008 Bottle at Chris_O’s 19th April 2008 tasting. Pours black with a line of tan head. Rich, malty, woody aroma, with lots of apparent alcohol (just look at the strength!) In the mouth, it’s completely full on - hefty malts, liquorice, dark fruits, musty old socks, coffee, chocolate, warming alcohol. The palate is full yet smooth. Very much an uncompromising brew. Superb.
