sayravai (3183), Helsinki, Finland Mar 19, 2007 Updated: Jul 16, 2008 (Bottled) Almost black color with a smallish, lacy head. Very strong, port-wineous and liquourish aroma with vanilla, alcohol (softens with yeast), loads of malt, plums and burned sugar. The intensive flavor is extremely everything: anise-herby, smoky, sweet-malty, aromatic- and bitter-hoppy, and ashy-dry. The long aftertaste is very astringent-hoppy, but also sweet-syrupy-malty. Alcohol is hidden even better in the flavor, than in the aroma. Extremely full-bodied palate is low-carbonated, liquour-like, very warming and sticky. This beyond excellent winter warmer is a delicious dessert brew, and pretty much renders all glühweins/glöggs useless. Despite of all this, Dark Horizon is not soy-sauce, like Sam Adams Triple Bock or many British old ales. Even at a hot summer terrace, it remains enjoyable The best beer I’ve had so far! (07/2008: This has aged soooo well! Not as syrupy-sweet anymore, but all the aromas and flavors are still intact. This one is pure gold.)
Slayer85 (457), Firenze, Italy Oct 2, 2008 Bottled. A black as pitch and opaque beer with a small (not much more than a ring) and disappearing brown head.Very malty aroma, powerful, though not as expected, roasty with notes of chocolate, coffee, licorice, much berries and some alcohol, that is overall enough hidden. The flavour begins very sweet, but not cloying or unbalanced. Good roastiness and very smooth, creamy. Notes of dark fruits, and all other typical notes of a good stout. Medium to full body, soft caebonation, very long finish with medium bitterness. The alcohol is felt and it’s warming more than disturbing and I can’t believe it’s 16%. It seems more 10-11%. Very drinkable for its size. Expensive, but without doubt worthy. Lightly syrupy, complex, I can’t ask for more. FrankJohansen (2807), Sabro, Denmark Sep 23, 2008 Bottle at EBF 2008. Black colour with a nice light brown colour. Complex aroma and taste of roasted malts, licorice and fruits. Lasting taste. Good beer. JorisPPattyn (4500), Antwerpen, Belgium Sep 19, 2008 Brown-black with red highlights. Coffee, black ink, solid liquorice sweets, and a minty finish. Coffee, smoked ham, ink-y, lot of syrup, ending on a fierce hopbitterbite. Roasted at the same time, of course. Unbelievably chewy, smooth as none. Alcoholwarming only in the aftertaste, dangerous to boot! Exceptional beerI Halleluiah to Jacob, after searching years after this beer, blackmailing beerpubowners and brewer, here it is. And it was worth it all. azlondon (501), Greater London, England Sep 19, 2008 My one #3006. My 500th rating (491 according to RB, though).<br />
