nearbeer (1329), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Aug 20, 2008 60 cl. Opaque black with a two-finger head that settles to a a lasting disc of cream. Soapy, swiss cheese lacing all over the glass. Cocoa, coffee, caramel and slight anise in the aroma. Smooth flavor blend of all the same elements, plus some charred hickory wood, raisin, dried peaches and cherry. Medium body is soft and smooth with light carbonation and a little hop tingle. Nicely balanced between sticky and watery, and has a slightly chalky, roasted finish that drys the big malts well. Very pricey, but damn good. jjpm74 (3110), Stratford, CT 06614, Connecticut, USA Nov 13, 2007 Bottles from multiple trades. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head that quickly subsides. Smells of chocolate, caramel, nuts, some peppery hints, touches of licorice. Tastes slightly bitter with a hint of tartness. Lots of chocolate and coffee hints with a nice underlying bitterness. Hops are subdued in this one as they should be in a porter. Mouthfeel is thick with some peppery splashes. Finish yields some nice spicy elements and touches of dark bitter malt. Well done! heemer77 (3782), Savannah, Missouri, USA Oct 26, 2007 Updated: Dec 18, 2007Now available at John’s in Iowa City. The body is absolutely black with no light penetrating. The head is light brown colored and dense. Aroma of honey and pears along with some carmel. The taste has some light almonds along with a little bitter coffee. There is also a bit of anise and dried apricots. Interesting and very smooth, especially for the abv. Nicely done. ChristianScheffel (2250), Odense, Denmark Jul 21, 2007 Black with a brown hue. Lasting, creamy off-white head. Caramel, toffee, chocolate, coffee aromas. Roast and dry flavour with a hint of licorice. No signs of hop flavour but a lasting roast aftertaste - great classic porter! PhillyBeer2112 (1861), Orange Park, Florida, USA Dec 11, 2007 Well this is a heck of a porter, fairly complex and fascinating as such things go. Big chocolate aroma with a plummy raisiny fruitiness to it - a bit like chocolate covered raisins. A very slight hint of honey. Full sweeping palate, soft and velvety, nearly chewy, with a semi-dry mildly roasted ashy finish. Lingering mild astringency. Hints of hazelnuts. Dark brown color, minimal head, soft carbonation.
