Commercial Description:
This is our first edition of Dark Horizon. It is the first, for us anyway. There will be more to follow, and even though they will be other editions, they will still be firsts. “Let’s go crazy!” said Tore. The last time he said that, we created #100, which proved to be a success. How could I not agree to his suggestion? “How crazy can we be?” I responded. “Go all the way!” he answered. So we started off with a beefed up Imperial Stout, extra dark and extra bitter, not much to it really, but maybe a bit over the top. When this brew had fermented, we gathered again on a sunny Saturday morning, ready for next move. Half a ton of demerara sugars and our homemade extract of coffee were waiting for us. Standing there with sticky sugars all over the brewery and us, I just couldn’t resist asking Tore: “Don’t you have better things to do during week ends?” To this point he still hasn’t answered me. After adding a hefty volume of wine yeast, we left this brew to itself for month. A good month, that was.

This is ale; it is also a wine, and a coffee drink. We’ve been playful and brewed a hybrid. Do yourself and your friends a favour and share this bottle with those you deem worthy. Dark Horizon is indeed a global brew. Inspiration from the US Midwest, malt from England, bottles from Germany, name from Japan, sugars from Mauritius, hops from the Pacific rim, Yeast from Canada, coffee from Colombia, brewed in Grimstad, Norway.

All bottles of Dark Horizon are numbered with its unique number, and all together we launched 6000 of this brew.

37 P, 75 IBU, 16% ABV.

500mL Bottle. Thanks iowaherkeye. Smoky dark barbeque sauce, with some molasses and a touch of dark roast. Tangy and fresh. Nice. Pours a dark, oily pitch black, with a creamy coffee head. Wow. Wicked hot fresh and prickly alcohol, followed by some intense sweet brown sugar. Wow. Just a lot of rich, refined porty licorice characters. Spicy. This has a long, long, long spicy, hot licoricey finish. Nice. Tastes far from 16%. Balanced. Nice nutty c-hops type finish. Rich, brandy-like and delicious. A wonderful full, strong Imperial stout.

i believe it was this bottle provided by rustychiles which put me over the edge! evil looking thick black pour with a super creamy tan head. intense aroma of burnt raisin bread, chocolate, roasted grain and strong black coffee. the flavor profile matches the nose but adds vanilla cream, molasses, prunes and way too much sugary sweetness for me to find enjoyable. alcohol plays a large role in trying to dry the palate but the body is too thick and syrupy for it to help any. so it just becomes a sticky fireball... i needed a lot of water to wash the coating from my mouth.8/5/6/2/14/3.5

500ml bottle #494 - shared by Mirjukka - thanks!
Black, no head. Alcoholic aroma. Rich coffee in the mouth. Smooth, just short of sticky. Tingly hops and tingly alcohol too. Sweetness well in check, but that’s thanks to 2 years of ageing. Coffee well in check too, but still the major detail of the taste. A bit alcoholic, but still tasty.

Bottle. Pours a dark and thick brown with very little head and aromas of chocolate and anise, molasses and alcohol. Flavor is similar and moutfeel is thick and almost chewy. This leaves a nice alcohol warmth as it rolls down to a happy belly.

Huge thanks to Guerde for sharing this one! Silky jet black pour, a very little brown head (minimal carbonation). Aroma was amazing; rich with coffee, vanilla and a little bit of bourbon. Flavor was just as good as the aroma and very complex. Started off with rich dark chocolate, coffee, creamy vanilla and some smoke; nice and complex. Left a light warming aftertaste, but seemed nowhere near 16% ABV

Bottle. Strong roasted malts, liquorice and chocolate aroma with hints of coffee. Black color with a brown head. Liquorice, chocolate and coffee body with strong notes of alcohol. Very balanced with a nice warm alcohol finish. Very Very nice.

Big thanks to MrBunn for sharing this one. Beautiful aromas of chocolate, licorice, and brown sugar. Taste is sweet and boozy, with a definite burn on its way down the gullet. Chocolate seems to be the lead flavor, with some vanilla notes, dark fruit and a splash of tobacco. Thumbs up.

I can’t for the life of me recall who gave this to me...maybe pantanap. Anyway, whoever did...thanks! Very dark pour with creamy tan head. Super roasty aroma with coffee, dark chocolate and dark fruits. Flavor is perfect match with the aromas...super enjoyable and layered with flavor. Outstanding beer that I’m glad I waited to try!
