In short: A sweet toasted big dark beer of some kind. Ok
How: Bottle 500ml. Consumed almost exactly 1 year after bottling date, which is also 4 years before expiration date!!!
The look: Dark brown body topped by a small tan head
In long: Nose of soft toffee candy, walnuts, very light notes of smoke, a bit of roast. Taste has smooth and round caramel, toasted wood, bittersweet chocolate, hazelnuts, soft black liquorice candy, fruitcake, roasted malts, yeast. Mild hops presence with a tobacco leafs flavour. Alcohol has a surprisingly strong showing for a mere 8.5% beer. Since this is classified as an American Strong Ale I was at least expecting some kind of hops presence, not the case here. Not too sure what of beer this was, I’ve had Belgian style dubbles that tasted like this, but whatever it is, this beer is actually quite decent, just not very good. It was my first bottle of God Jul and I find it a bit overrated. But an intelligent man is a man who knows he can be wrong and his opinions can be changed, and nobody can convince me otherwise.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 wyzzywyz22 (1472) - Wirral, Merseyside, ENGLAND - JAN 27, 2012
Bottle from Chester Beer & Wine. Deep dark brown pour with a lingering tan head. Some nice roasted malt and dark chocolate notes evident in the nose alongside lesser notes of spice, vanilla and berry. Creamy, smooth and fullish mouthfeel .Rich, complex and sweetish flavour that displayed similar traits to the nose and well hidden alcohol. Some hop bitterness came into play towards the finish. A very tasty winter brew.
2.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 6/20 obguthr (2377) - Poquoson, Virginia, USA - JAN 20, 2012
Fig and dark cereal grain nose. Clear mahogany, thick beige head, good lace. Dry and grainy. Plum skins also present. Wanting sweetness. Flavor is not pleasant. Finishes with an aspirin bitterness. Bleh, this beer is a bit of a disaster.
4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 Cunningham (1751) - Halden, NORWAY - JAN 19, 2012
This is Christmas! Bottle from Systembolaget. It is like going on sale when you buy this precious item in Sweden. Although it is produced and bottled in Norway. It is half price in Sweden. And I have to have a lot of them for christmas. Well it is a really black (it is allowed to use that word when speaking about beer) body with a beige creamy head. How do I describe a complex beer like this in few words..... Aroma is a mix of coffe, vanilla, fruit and sweet malt. Flavour....rich caramel, dark fruits, vanilla and hints of roasted malt. And off course a lot of hopps. Cheers frinds!

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Stephanos (617) - NORTHERN IRELAND - JAN 8, 2012
Darkest brown with a fluffy tan head, treacle nose. Quite a lot of marmitey yeast umamai too. Fairly sweet with a rich maltiness but not cloying or alcoholic for its ABV, with just the hint of tropical fruit from those centenial hops. A true winter warmer.
