COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark malts provide a coffee chocolate sweetness on the front of the palate which is balanced with Goldings hop bitterness on the back. Rolled oats provide a smooth medium body. The Flavour changes down the glass. Is top fermented and bottled conditioned (yeast sediment). 2008 Gold Medal winner, best stout packaged and draught and BEST WA BEER at 2008 Perth Royal Beer Show (PRBS). Also Gold Medal and best stout at 2008 Sydney Royal Beer Competition (SRBC), and 2009 International Beer Challenge gold medal winner.

[On-tap at Clancy’s Fish Pub in Fremantle] Pours dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma is somewhat weak, some chocolate and roasted malt. The roasted malt comes out more as it warms, as does a decent amount of a sweetish smell. Taste is chocolate, roasted malt, a little alcohol, decent bitterness, and some unidentifiable herbal notes. Medium-thin mouthfeel, very smooth, and the finish is dry, and long, with lingering bitterness, yeast and roasted malt. Well, not the most exciting beer to drink, or rate, but it was well-crafted and I did enjoy it. Will hopefully revisit it at some point.

Personally, it is everthing I could want from a sweet oatmeal stout. The roast malts give this the feel of silk in your mouth and the sweet flavour is delicious. The addition of the Goldings hop however, prevents either of the two dominant flavours from being overwhelming at all. It lends the beer the slightest of bites after the velvety roast malts, caramel, coffee and chocolate flavours have all done their work. Easily my favourite WA beer at present and at slightly above chilled temperature on a cold day/night, it wants for nothing.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with mahogany flashes down the side of the glass. Rocky tan coloured head. Nice balanced aromas of roasted grain and espresso coffee. Slight sourness comes through as it sits in the glass and warms. Flavours show plenty of sweetness up front with loats of dark caramel. Roasted bitterness comes through near the finish. Medium mouthfeel. Slightly oily on the tongue. Like it.

330ml bottle sent to me my Mulder, drank from a tulip... A dark brown body, nothing of note. The head is medium tan, about two fingers rises and leave a full finger cap for several minutes. Ok lacing... Right away I don’t get much out of this weak head so I give it a couple minutes to open up. Even as it warms, still not much comes through. The front gives off a very small bit of chocolate, a touch of smoke, then you get a weird body aroma. As bad as that sounds its not horrendous, primarily weak and boring... The taste is much stronger but the taste and mouthfeel are distracting. Its very ashy, charred ash, harsh. Some stale coffee and prunes. This is not very good... The mouthfeel is off, over-carbonated and dry is not a good combination. My first impression of Australian craft, not off to a great start. I we go up from here.

A Mes rate. Bottle at Chris O’s Kook Fest tasting.
Black body with a good tan head. A nice chocolate fronted stout with a good hit of roasty coffee and a strangely floral note. And erm... that’s it. Nice enough, just doesn’t do much.

Bottle at chris_o’s "smash Kook’s granny tasting". Alround rating: Sweet roasty maly, bit of chocolate, syrupy yet thin(that doesnt make sence), near no hop. But a nice drink.

As good as any Australian stout I have drunk in recent times. Very dark brown with a creamy orange infused head. Nose shows sweet roasted malts and a touch of dark, bitter chocolate. Aromas have good presence. Palate structure is quite soft and again the sweet roast and chocolate flavours show the way. Gets a touch fruity and almost citric in the back palate as the chocolate falls away.
