Commercial Description:
Dark malts provide a coffee chocolate sweetness on the front of the palate which is balanced with Goldings hop bitterness on the back. Rolled oats provide a smooth medium body. The Flavour changes down the glass. Is top fermented and bottled conditioned (yeast sediment). 2008 Gold Medal winner, best stout packaged and draught and BEST WA BEER at 2008 Perth Royal Beer Show (PRBS). Also Gold Medal and best stout at 2008 Sydney Royal Beer Competition (SRBC), and 2009 International Beer Challenge gold medal winner.

[On-tap at Clancy’s Fish Pub in Fremantle] Pours dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma is somewhat weak, some chocolate and roasted malt. The roasted malt comes out more as it warms, as does a decent amount of a sweetish smell. Taste is chocolate, roasted malt, a little alcohol, decent bitterness, and some unidentifiable herbal notes. Medium-thin mouthfeel, very smooth, and the finish is dry, and long, with lingering bitterness, yeast and roasted malt. Well, not the most exciting beer to drink, or rate, but it was well-crafted and I did enjoy it. Will hopefully revisit it at some point.

Bottle at chris_o’s "smash Kook’s granny tasting". Alround rating: Sweet roasty maly, bit of chocolate, syrupy yet thin(that doesnt make sence), near no hop. But a nice drink.

As good as any Australian stout I have drunk in recent times. Very dark brown with a creamy orange infused head. Nose shows sweet roasted malts and a touch of dark, bitter chocolate. Aromas have good presence. Palate structure is quite soft and again the sweet roast and chocolate flavours show the way. Gets a touch fruity and almost citric in the back palate as the chocolate falls away.

Bottle. Very dark brown, thin brown cap. Aromas of soy sauce and coffee. Burnt malt bitterness, rich and robust coffee and chocolate flavours. Bitter dry finish. Surprised that this is categorized as a sweet stout, but delicious nonetheless.

Bottle - Black with good tan head. Medium carbonation and body. Sweet. Roasted malts, chocolate, coal tar, smoke. Smooth and sweet but balanced with a lightly bitter finish.

Pours a thick jet black with reasonably-sized head that quickly fades to a thin layer. Huge chocolate and coconut aroma wafts from the glass along with the expected roasted expresso. Lovely sweet background reminds me of morning coffee on the way to uni. Very slight hops aroma. Huge roasted malts/grains hit, slightly offset by acidic tang. Well countered by lasting bitterness. Taste doesn’t quite impress as much as the aroma. Rather smooth, but quite lively carbonation (more than I expected at least). Was also expecting it to be a tad creamier. Aroma is what really defines this beer. A very enjoyable stout none the less.

At times I wonder if it is hard to make a bad stout. This is a nice, well made stout, but at the same time is it really pushing the boundaries? It pours nice with a nice chocoloate brown colour with mocha head. Aroma is a mix of chocolate, coffee and perhaps a touch of vegemite. Flavour is a mix of the aforementioned aroma’s with dominance of the chocolate element. Bitterness is nice but as Chris points out is slightly astringent. Nice but there are better ones out there IMHO.

Poured black with substantial mocha coloured head. Aromas are dominated by milky coffee and bitter chocolate, however a substanital amount of dark berries and sweet malt are present. Palate is super smooth, more milky coffee and bitter chocolate transfer to to the palate. Finish brings some sligtly astringent bitterness, i’d say more from the dark malts than the hops. Sweet malt makes another appearance in the back palate to balance out the dark, bitter malt. Very enjoyable, but i don’t quite see what all the fuss is about...The 3.4 average tells me that most are in agreeance.
