Tap at Gingerman in NYC. Pours a clear cola SRM with tan foam and good lace. Sweet raisin nose with mild umami flavors. Taste is sweet up front, moving to decent ashy bitterness and paper. Gets fairly sticky. Finishes dry and bitter with small umami, smoke, salt. Drinks more like a 6% porter.

12 oz. Opaque with a small ring of creamy bubbles. Aromas of toasted marshmallow and chocolate. Taste is chocolate, caramel apple, grain, and a touch of coffee and oats. Medium body is a bit too sweet, but smooth with low carbonation.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Appropriately black-bodied and with a thin creme-chocolate layer. Pepsi-cola nose with some rough, sweet malts that finally appear after much coaxing and deep sniffs. Fruity body, full of ripe orange zest and alcohol. Not roasty at all for an imperial stout--almost as if relying on debittered black malts entirely. After considerably patient aeration and tasting, thick chocolate licorice notes unfurl. Thinnish and under-developed for the style.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
22. Pours black with a loose and wispy swirl of dark tan mousse at the very edge. Big sweet prune and soy sauce nose, definitely a little out of balance and a touch on the boozy side. Creamy, sticky body, fairly thick. Big hot mid palate showing prunes and soy sauce. Dark chocolate and roasty malt under that. Hot finish.

2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
12oz bottle. Black pour, very thin brown head. Look like a glass of Coke. Smells like sweet wort, some chocolate. Really smells like imitation vanilla extract. Non-existent carbonation. Flavor of carob, bittersweet cocoa, spruce tips hops, and far away dark fruit. Not what I expected of honestly like in an Imperial Porter.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 oz. bottle, split 4 ways, pours near black with a small off-white head. Aroma of vanilla, carob, light chocolate, faint espresso and toasted bread. Flavour of vanilla, carob, espresso, toasted bread, low roast quality and low-to-medium sweetness. Medium palate with the vanilla notes upfront, ending sweet and bitter. Good.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
22oz bottle. Vague tart grain aroma with a little chocolate and smoke but not really distinct. The flavor is dry and slightly tart without much if any smoke character and not a whole lot of roast either. Not really sure whatís going on here but it isnít good. Way too acidic to an uncomfortable level and I guess I expected smoke based on the name but that isnít really showing either.

(#42) 22oz bottle. Aged myself from late 2009. Poured into tulip glass. Appearance: Dark brown/tan color from bottle. Sits black/dark brown in glass. Minimal head; dissipated quickly. Great lacing. Aroma: Molasses, caramel, dark chocolate, candied dates, vanilla. Taste: Cocoa, espresso, hazelnuts, caramel, vanilla, raisins. Some woody/smoky flavor present. Palate: Med/Full bodied. Smooth. Creamy. Good carbonation feel, not too much. Finishes with coffee tones. Overall: Delicious. I think aging this one worked well, it might be even better than when I first had it. Would prob buy again.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 ounce bottle - $1.99 at Hop City in Atlanta, Georgia.
Appearance: Pours a dark brown body, a little flash of mahogany at the edges in the right light, and underneath a thin, tenuous, off-white head.
Smell: Roasty, toasty maltiness with a noted overtone of moist dark fruits and subtler hints of chocolate powder, caramel, and alcohol.
Taste: Well-toasted bread with a roasty coffee tone and some soft touches of bittersweet chocolate, even less when it comes to some mild caramel. Growing raisiny dark fruitiness. Lightly piney, spruce-like hop accents with a middling bitterness pairing with the roasted grains. Slight alcohol presence, picking up a tawny port hint. Predominately a trail of the bittersweet chocolate until the warming, lightly bitter finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Just a half-notch past medium carbonation.
Overall: Itís OK. One of the better releases from the Napa Smith lineup, though thatís not saying a whole helluva lot.
