COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Draught only Barleywine with Botrytis-infused Semillon grapes & 2-year-old Barrel Aged Imperial Porter.

Take a trip with us to a simpler time with this “one-off” Barleywine from Napa Smith Brewery. Staying true to our roots in Napa Valley, we have produced Grateful Dog by incorporating late harvest Semillon Grapes sourced from Roger Harrison — one of the Napa Valley’s most noted dessert wine specialists who produces Nightingale and Nobility wines. But our collective journey has just begun. Before kegging, we blended in a portion of our 2-year old Barrel Aged Imperial Porter. Grateful Dog is a BIG beer. At 10% alcohol this beer is a Zen-like invitation to practice moderation. Grateful Dog pours with a rich, dark mahogany color and a long-lasting creamy off-white head. Aromas of cherries, dried fruit, chocolate and coffee show strongly. The flavor is complex and multi-layered, starting with a subtle, sweet fruitiness and progressing to dark caramel with a pronounced wood aged porter character to finish. Here in the Napa Valley we turn wine into beer!

Had this on tap at the East Nashville Beer Festival. The description of this is really impressive. Perhaps I wasn’t able to give it a full appreciation, but I struck me as very underwhelming. The nose was big malt barelywine but nothing stood out. In fact, it seemed muddled. The flavors are a bit better and let me know that I’m drinking quality. There are no overpowering alcohol notes and it transitions smoothly over the tongue. But there are is also nothing that makes this stand out - and give the porter and grape additions, I was really hoping.

A decent barleywine. Pours a beautiful amber color with a white head. Smells of wine, nothing too interesting. Taste is wine and orange peel. Very smooth for a barleywine. Can definitely taste the alcohol. Had on tap at the brewery. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft @ SF Beer Week Opening Celebration 2013, Concourse Exhibition Center, San Francisco, CA. Pours a dark amber orange color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty spicy caramel aroma with hoppy hints. Sweetish malty fruity spicy caramel flavor. Has a sweetish malty caramel finish with weak hoppy hints.

On tap at the brewery. It pours a clear, dark orange color with red highlights and an orange head. The aroma is malty with caramel and toast. The flavor is more fruity with some sweet grape, plum and raisins. The body was a bit light for the ABV I thought, but it was a respectable barleywine.

On tap. Opaque chocolate color, with a lasting ring of cream. Cherry, caramel and some light charred wood in the aroma. Taste is caramel, cherry, light chocolate, and an earthy, spicy oak finish. Med body has light carbonation, is sweet but well balanced by the spicy oak and roast, and is dangerously drinkable. Nice American take on the traditional English BW style. Doesn’t have the typical overdose of hops that most US BWs have (although I like the big-hop style too), but uses the oak and the roast from the porter to provide an interesting balance.

Mahogany in color with an off-white head. Nose starts off a touch metallic, but lots of wood and vanilla follow. A bit of sweet malt and grape with a bit of cola and even root beer to it. Flavor is a touch roasty and astringent. Wood and vanilla are present. Sweet grapes with the same root beer note that existed on the nose. A hint of chocolate, maybe some other fruit notes, but just sort of jumbled and not really all that great.

UPDATED: JUL 6, 2012 On tap. Pours with a clear bronze hued body with a large and foamy tan head. Aromas are of caramelized sugar, quite sweet, bourbon, cotton candy, brown sugar, vanilla/vanillin, currants, dates, concord grapes, very sweet with lots of caramel. Moderate dark fruit esters. Flavors are sickly sweet, cloying, low tannin, prunes, plums, candied fruit. Very estery in addition to the caramel. Lots of dark fruits. Low wood. Some alcohol warmth, albeit moderate. Low bubbles, quite viscous and sugary. Too sweet to really enjoy (at least for me).
On tap at Stone with slightly better results. Pours with a clear bronze hued body with a large and lasting off-white head. Aromas are huge with brown sugar, raisins, currants, marmalade, toffee. Sticky, very English, sweet, boozy, and a touch zesty. Flavors are of coconut and oxidation, boozy, sweet, tangy, toffee, marmalade and medium ester. Strong alcohol with some currants. Full bodied, some cereal grain, rotten orange, tamarind. Sticky, low carbonation and warming. 3.2
