Poured into a Napa Smith pint glass at the Napa Smith Brewery. From notes, July 29, 2012. Thanks Karl!
A: Pours a clear, light brown/amber with a quarter finger head that leaves decent lacing.
S: Extremely hop forward with lots of citrus and grapefruit and hints of lime. A little bit of oak on the nose too.
T: You would think at 144 IBU’s this would just be a straight hop bomb, but its very well balanced. Starts with pungent, sweaty hop flavors up front, followed by caramel and sweet, bready malt in the middle that fades to clove and musty citrus in the finish.
M: Creamy and medium bodied with good carbonation.
O: Definitely improves as it warms and the complexities from the barrel aging become more apparent. My one complaint is it is a little sweet and syrupy but it doesn’t become cloying. One of Napa Smith’s better beers.
Serving: draft

Typical amber colored DIPA body with a two finger thick head and mild residual carbonation. The smell was very mild for a DIPA, with the hops coming across as piney, floral, herbal, and earthy. The taste was quite bitter, with the same piney-earthy-herbal hop profile up front, and some spice in the finish. The malt was evident as a simple and light sugary taste. The overall flavor profile reminded me lot of a strong tea with some sweetness. The beer drank much more easy than the 9.2% ABV it contained, and there wasn’t any warming or burn at all. This beer did not start very promising, but delivered the hops in the end.

bottle. citrus nose with bread, tea and pinch of cocoa. medium full body, but refreshing. not overly sticky or sweet. not overly bitter either. a good balance to say the least. lots of sweet hop resins(pine, apricot, lychee) with toast, caramel, butter, hints of licorice. another great one from these guys.

650 ml. Copper with a lasting quarter inch of sugary foam, and lace all over the glass. Smells of pineapple, grapefruit, resin and earthy molasses. Big flavors of toffee, mango. grapefruit, apricot, tea leaf and orange are tamed by a lingering finish of mint, evergreen resin and oak. Medium-heavy body is velvety smooth, has just a touch of alcohol warmth, and has nice balance. Dangerously drinkable.
