330 ml bottle. Pours dark brown with a large light brown head. The aroma is very hoppy full of grapefruit with some floral notes. Medium to full body with soft carbonation. The flavor is medium bitter with some fruity acidity. The taste is again very fruity full of grapefruits and some lychee that dominates over the roasted malt.

16/V/16 - sample @ Leuven Innovation - BB: n/a (2016-558) Thanks to the Belgian RB crew for sharing today’s beers!

Clear dark brown beer, creamy beige head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: lovely tropical fruits, some melons, pineapple, mango. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bitter start, very hoppy, citrus, bit malty, some caramel, lovely stuff! Aftertaste: bitter hops, melons, pretty bitter, slightly roasted touch, that’s how I like my black ipa’s! ;-)

330ml bottle, 8.5 % abv, from Habemus Birra. Huge, bubbly, fawn-coloured head with fine duration and leaving clingy lacing on the glass. Deep black body added by a brownish glint. Mixed nose of roasted malts and sappy citrus, inviting. Roasted malty aroma of dark chocolate nicely blended with red oranges. Lingering malt-fruity bitterness to the ending. Full to medium bodied and a well blended version of the style (hotel room, Alicante 03.06.2016).

10cl sample from bottle at the Leuven Innovation Beer Festival II 2016 (16 V 2016). A heavy archetype black IPA to me. Black tanned brew with white collar. The nose has huge weed, citrus and passiflora features. The taste is rather herby than fruity. The mouthfeel is very enjoyable with some pinewood notes. A classic IPA taste combined with a black coffee bitterness. Sharp, clean, no real downsides to this Naparbier Back in Black.

330ml bottle from Ales By Mail. Almost black, reasonable head. Boiled sweet hop aroma. Caramel cola hop flavour. Smooth and well balanced. One of the best Black IPAs.

At LIBF. Very thick and dense, pale greyish beige head, blackish robe. Aroma of fresh garden weeds and dried nettles, yellow grapefruit peel, bitter chocolate, white pepper, roasted peanuts. Clean fruity taste, hints of elderberry and chestnut with a sourish edge, carbonation on the sharp side for the style, nutty and eventually roasted bittering maltiness with a weedy, spicy, drying hop bitter finish with some citrus peel notes retronasally. Typically one of those new European BIPAs and a very good one at that.

Bottle @ LIBF’16. Shared with the RB Belgian team. Fin brun, col beige.
