Bottle (from the brewer at Gaenstaller Zoiglstube). Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is medium to dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (cookie, toasted/roasted grain), with STRONG notes of smoke (peat/Islay whisky, campfire, chimney) and juniper. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety/creamy texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Smoke bomb! Even after all the liquid is gone from the glass, it still smells intensely of Islay whisky and campfire. Schlenkerla is only faintly smoky by comparison. Maybe a little intense even for me, but damned clean and balanced in the mouth.

Bottle shared by H.G. at the Zoiglstube. An exceptionally soft body with a layered and complex nose of salty peat smoke, soil, earth, nuts, wood, twig, seed crackers, and more. Very rich, sweet and beefy malt with astounding clarity of all components. Islay-like malt, juniper wood, leather, smoked sea salt, good god. Savory and salivating with remarkable fluffiness. This might be the closest smoke character to Islay malt I’ve experienced. And only 10% of the grain bill being Gotland smoked malt, it really does boggle the mind. Unreal.

Draught. Cloudy deep brown liquid with medium off-white head. Aroma of peat, smoke, ash, bread, bacon, sweet toffee and light chocolate. Taste is light sweet and light bitter with notes of peat, smoke, toffee, dried fruit, bread and toast. Light to medium bodied with low to medium carbonation. Really nicely drinkable and smoky. Delicious.

Tap at Borefts ’13, 27/09/13. Lightly hazed dark amber with a thin light tan head. Nose is big on smoke, light roast, TCP, antiseptic qualities, toffee. Taste follows, light sugars, TCP, medicinal notes, toffee. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, plenty of smoke in the finish. Ok rausch, a little OTT on the TCP/Medicinal notes.
