3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle (250 ml) @ Man in the Moon. Vintage 2008. Black with a small bubbly beige head and little lacing. Aroma is of dark chocolate, roasted malt, berries, soy sauce, molasses and sherry notes. Taste is of dark chocolate, molasses, roasted malt, sherry, soy sauce, light acidic notes and some fruitiness. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Sticky finish. Pretty good RIS, but it’s clearly showing signs of age and oxidation. A little bit better than the Pure Swedish Oak we had side-by-side with this one, but miles away from the Konkajks! version we had at Akkurat the day before. I can see why the ratings were so high a few years ago though.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
0.18l bottle from 2008 traded with Jeff1 and shared with The Tasting Crew. Oho! What a treat! This is a dark deep brown one with a small sidesticking ashy head. On the aroma this one is quite sweet, I get chocolate, vanilla, whisky, raisins, dark dried fruits, sweet heather honey, coffee tones and dark roasted malts. Amazing aroma? Yeah, really really nice indeed! It starts off with a smooth burned bitter and black malty, woody flavor before it really evolves to a monster and tasted of strong espresso-chocolate with both leather couch, burned coffee beans and dark dried oxidized fruits. It finishes off dark chocolaty and acidic, and it’s extreme mouthdrying in the aftertaste. A damn tasty one! 16.06.2012

250 ML bottle 2008 bottle
Black pour, touches of ruby. Just a slight amount of head. Off white color.
Nose is slight oak, chocolate, prune, stewed licorice, and char. Brilliant nose. Quite complex.
Taste reflects the nose but add in more oak and add in coffee. Bold and complex beer. Far bigger than the 9.5% leads onto. Big time sipper. Tip top stuff

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Thanks to Joey for the share. A bit like it’s brother or sister beer, the bourbon isn’t super notable in Kaggen but it does shade over a little bit of the fruitier elements of the base beer. Really good stuff, and like Kaggen I’d probably give it a higher score if my pours had been more than 3 or so ounces.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Rated on 4-28-2012 at Fort Wayne, IN Gathering. This beer, courtesy of jsquire, was poured into a snifter and has a very small head, opaque dark brown body, and spotty amounts of lacing. The aroma is roasted malt, molasses, chocolate, coffee, smokey, dark fruits, and some alcohol. The flavor is sweet, molasses, roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and smokey. The mouthfeel is soft and this beer is medium bodied. Wow! What a great tasting beer! It is a complex and a sipping beer at its best! I couldn’t get enough of this beer! It is more than worth trying and a beer that I want to drink again!

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
2007 bottle at Bishops Arms Gamla Stan, Stockholm. Pitch black color with a nice beige head. Aroma is roasted malt with chocolate, dark dried fruits like plum, vanilla, wood and a lot of olives. Taste is sweet, almost the same as the aroma with the addition of coffee. Full body, sticky with soft carbonation and bitter and alcoholic finish. I think that the 2008 bottles that I tried three times in the past (at Olrepubliken Goteborg) were better! I would rate them with a 5!

25cl bottle thanks to omhper. 2008 bottle. Cheers Per! This is my #1000 rating so I thought this would be a great opportunity to drink this beast. Ok breathe in, breathe out. Color is perfect. Dark as hell, with a nice thin beige head. Body is creamy but more lively than I was expecting. Finish is huge. Taste is medium to high bitter, low sweet. Aroma is liquor, chocolate, coffee, wood, alcohol and fruits.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
2005 bottle shared with Nelson, Winter of 2008.
Viscous, jet black pour shows off some faint deep mahogany brown tints on the edges. A small but respectable amount of deeply burnt beige head is somewhat retained, especially given the age (and size of the bottle). Very little sediment on the bottom....
Fantastically strong aroma showcases all the vinous fruitiness, black licorice and dry roastiness I look for in stouts. Not a chocolate-fudge bomb and very mild with the hops. Hints of light oxidation play on the end, drying the roasted barley notes considerably, and giving a light bready/crustiness. No alcohol noted whatsoever (probably masked by the huge amount of dark fruitiness and charred roast). This is, IMHO, the ideal abv for the style.
Soothing, creamy, luscious mouthfeel is the first thing that comes to mind. Despite the relatively low carbonation, it never gets watery. A good amount of roasted barley up front followed by soft, caramelized sugars and deep, rich base malts. Prunes, red wine, moderate vanilla notes and light coffee suggestions are all perfectly melded and balanced. I like Fiuljins suggestion that this is "really well mixed together". Light hop bitterness, some crackery/bready hints of oxidation and little alcohol noted. Really nice stuff, malty and rich but not underattenuated or cloying. Glad I didn’t wait any longer to drink my bottle, as I don’t think this is gaining anything with more age. I assume from the bottom of the bottle, lower head retention and preliminary signs of oxidation, that this is filtered, even if only lightly so. If so, that’s still one hell of a mouthfeel and very impressive. Could use a touch more length on the finish, though, flavor-wise.
