4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle, courtesy askofficerfriendly. A nice start to Dark Lord weekend for sure, thanks Greg. Pours black with hazy tan lacing and a mild head. Nose is big on dark fruits, with a hint of roast present somewhere through the thick, sweet caramel and dry acrid tones of slight ash. Flavor has a lot of the same going on for it, with a hearty dose of nuts and toffee, as well as chocolate and coffee notes. Full-bodied, drinks real nice and real easy. A lovely beer, and a nice change of pace from the usual roast bombs from the states (which I also adore).

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle: 2008 vintage. Huge thanks to Erik for trading me this 25cl beast. Thick, oily black pour with a creamy, fine-bubbled tan head that slowly forms moments later. Super robust aroma, could smell this as soon as I cracked the bottle. Molten fudge, chocolate cake, leather, bitter coffee grounds, anise, sweet blackcurrant, burnt caramel, brown sugar, a touch of smoke, heavily roasted malts just edging on ashy with a slight kiss of char. Flavor up front is full of silky, bittersweet dark chocolate. Like biting into a 86% cacao bar with wafts of coffee beans, roasted malts, & light anise following right behind. Lots of smoked barley, hinting with an underscore of leather, tobacco, & mild smoke, slightly reminiscent of Hair of the Dog’s Adam. Finishes with anise, dense fudge, light soy, burnt caramel, & bitter cocoa nibs. No oxidation, even with ~7 years on it. Delicious, with a creamy & smooth body. No bells & whistles, just a simple, amazing imperial stout.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle at the Ultimate Imperial Stout Tasting. Hum, this one’s a bit over its time. One can still detect a decent dose of roasted malts and coffee, but it has faded and oxidation has kicked in through some port notes. Interesting nevertheless.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle @ New Years Tasting. 2008 vintage. Thnx to Martijn for sharing this rare gem. Pours a pitch black beer with a very small beige head that leaves directly after pouring. Aroma is malty, coffee, some herbal notes like laurel and it has this typical Närke feel to it. Flavor is quite thin to be honest, very malt forward and licorice. Some port and madeira notes in the back, boozy mouthfeel and finish. Good stuff, but I think the age is getting to this beer now.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle (250 ml) @ Man in the Moon. Vintage 2008. Black with a small bubbly beige head and little lacing. Aroma is of dark chocolate, roasted malt, berries, soy sauce, molasses and sherry notes. Taste is of dark chocolate, molasses, roasted malt, sherry, soy sauce, light acidic notes and some fruitiness. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Sticky finish. Pretty good RIS, but it’s clearly showing signs of age and oxidation. A little bit better than the Pure Swedish Oak we had side-by-side with this one, but miles away from the Konkajks! version we had at Akkurat the day before. I can see why the ratings were so high a few years ago though.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
0.18l bottle from 2008 traded with Jeff1 and shared with The Tasting Crew. Oho! What a treat! This is a dark deep brown one with a small sidesticking ashy head. On the aroma this one is quite sweet, I get chocolate, vanilla, whisky, raisins, dark dried fruits, sweet heather honey, coffee tones and dark roasted malts. Amazing aroma? Yeah, really really nice indeed! It starts off with a smooth burned bitter and black malty, woody flavor before it really evolves to a monster and tasted of strong espresso-chocolate with both leather couch, burned coffee beans and dark dried oxidized fruits. It finishes off dark chocolaty and acidic, and it’s extreme mouthdrying in the aftertaste. A damn tasty one! 16.06.2012

250 ML bottle 2008 bottle
Black pour, touches of ruby. Just a slight amount of head. Off white color.
Nose is slight oak, chocolate, prune, stewed licorice, and char. Brilliant nose. Quite complex.
Taste reflects the nose but add in more oak and add in coffee. Bold and complex beer. Far bigger than the 9.5% leads onto. Big time sipper. Tip top stuff
