Roasted malts balanced out with the star hop in tihs recipe, Amarillo. It’s a dark twist on an IPA.

On draught at Green Dragon for Black Friday. Not as hoppy as other CDAs, but has a really pleasing chocolate and malt flavor.

Had on tap at Barrel and Keg in Salem Oregon with my brother B5. Color is an interesting light reddish brown yet opaque. The hops is present with a citrusy twist, well balanced with solid toasty biscuit malts. Decent off white head that stays as a thin top layer. A good example of CDA. 9.0 BD

Draft. Aroma of chalky cocoa, which is exactly how it tastes. Dies on the palate a bit. A one-note, but a good one-note.

A decent balance of pine needles and lightly roasted malt and chocolate. I’ve had better, but had far worse. This was nice, just didn’t stand out.

16oz tallboy from Spirits Boro. Poured a huge beige foamy head with a dark blackish brown body. Aroma/flavor of overly sweet chocolate, some citrus, darker toast, wet pine needles, dry grass. Body is over carbonated but not as bad as Old Grogham or whatever the other one was. Meh, a bit too bubbly and sweet.

Can at Percy Street BBQ, Philly, 29/11/13. Mid black with a big ole frothy tan head of bubbleage. Nose is bitter hopsm light pine, light roast, hint of tropicals with grapefruit prominent, metallic nip. Taste comprises earthy dank hops, mineral bite, light cocoa dusting, bitter grapefruit, pine. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry finale with a little grassy hop bitterness. Decent enough CDA.

FROM NOTES: July 29, ’12 Poured from a bottle into a tulip. A: Nose is roast forward, some citrus and caramel. A: Clear dark brown body, one-finger head and not much lacing. T: roasty with a wee bit of chocolate, got more bitter on back end as it warmed, piney, balanced citrus sweetness. P: on the light side of medium, a bit sticky. O: Better than some CDAs, but a long way’s from the plethora of this emerging style, too malty, not enough hops.

Draft at 16 Tons Cafe, Eugene. Pours an opaque black, little to no tan head. Aroma kind of oatmeal, roasty, candi sugar, little evidence of hops. Body medium lively, roasty. Finish surprisingly bitter. Very nice.

Can:   Deep deep brown, moderate frothy beige head, so-so lacing.   Strong piney nose, backside has some soft roasted malts with just a touch of cow pasture.   Thankfully that cow pasture isnt overly powerful.   Bitter hops, burnt malts, and soy on the tongue.   Comes across as a bit acrid, without being ashy or roasty.   Has more bitterness to do with something other than hops.   Hard to describe I guess.   Assertive Pine, almost like the cleaner... a touch medicinal.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Finishes with some roasted malts, pine, and acrid bitterness... almost like charred grain husks.   Its okay, but wouldn’t reach for it again.

Can from Blue Dog Lansdale. Pours turbid chestnut with 1-finger light brown head. Nose is gigantic resiny hops, cacao, caramel and ruby malts, spruce. Tastes resiny, heavy in the IBU dept., with notes of vinous fruit, nuts, and cacao in the finish. This one is a true sleeper.

A very decent CDA, and a pleasent addition to the style, dark roast notes in the body with hints of chocolate, piney hop profile is a little off, definitely on the porter side of CDA.
