3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 ScottyP (425) - Brentwood, USA - MAY 2, 2009
Pour is brown with brown head. Roasted Malty chocolaty aroma. Similar taste, however some fruit comes into play for me I didn’t pick up in the aroma. A pleasant surprise! Nice bitter finish. Easy to drink, solid Imp stout.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Onenote81 (902) - Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA - APR 27, 2012
Originally reviewed: 2/8/09. Pours a deep black, with very little tan head. This dissipates to just a ring, and leaves no lacing or webbing at all. Disappointing. Smells like a stout. Chocolate, some coffee tones, and alcohol. Nothing much there.
Taste is faintly chocolate, but mostly raisiny, with some coffee mixed in. Hints of plum in there as I’m tasting slight fruitiness. Mouthfeel is weak and thin. If I’m getting a stout, let alone an imperial stout, it needs to be thick. It needs to almost be a meal on its own.
You could drink a few of these because it’s so thin, but I’d rather not. One and done I think...for now.
I guess this is the first time this beer has been bottled. It needs to be tweaked a bit. Maybe on tap this would be better.

Bottles. Dark brown with a thin tan head. Nose of sugary sweet cocoa, roasted malts, licorice. Quite messy flavor and very thin for the style. Similar to the Carolina Brewery’s Imperial Stout. A first attempt that has never been properly critiqued and changed.

A well made beer that lacks complexity per style, not quiet big enough to be an Imperial Stout, I like the hop flavor and roast malts, flavor has some coffee notes with med body, alcohol is well hidden for 9%

Bottle from Sam’s in Durham. Pours very dark brown with tan head that fades to a ring. Nose seems oxidized; nutty and chocolate notes. Mild hop notes. Super-sweet cheap coffee. Similar taste, but quite thin

12 oz. bottle from emacgee- thanks again, Ethan! Pours a dark coffee brown color- not opaque on the pour- with a finger-thick tan head that dissipates into just some film and a ring. Aroma of roasted malts, figs, plums, prunes, cocoa, coffee, rust, and burnt toast. Flavor of roasted malts, burnt toast, caramel, prunes, figs, brown sugar, and molasses. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a sweet, roasty mouthfeel and roasty finish. The 8.4% ABV is completely hidden. Nothing too special here for an imperial stout but not bad overall.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Aurelius (3147) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - MAR 23, 2011
An enjoyable brew. Thanks to LuckyDog for bringing this back from the Carolinas. Dr. Pepper colored, decent label. The main issue that I had with this was that it smelled a little of English peas. Lightly sweet, a little cocoa, good roast. Slightly heavy bodied.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 DukeBrewDevil (648) - Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA - JAN 30, 2011
Bottle. Black, lets some light through. Starts with a medium head then fades to flat looking. Nose of black licorice and Folgers. Flavor starts out with black coffee then turns to peppery hops. Thin body for an imperial, but pretty drinkable. Good, though it’s in little way a full bodied imperial stout.

Pours a dark black with copper tones and a one finger light tan head. Nose is papery and mildly tart, caramel and day old coffee. Similar to a Guinness or a Murphys to me, and I don’t like Guinness or Murphys. Flavor is meh, some roasty toasty grain and a bit chocolate. Not much else though. Needs more body and character in general.
