Waxed bottle shared by jmborggren. Pours an opaque deep amber color with a medium sized white head. The aroma has a nice tart fruity quality, oak, mild herbal notes and some toasted malt. The flavor has more tart fruits, a big woody component, some toasted malts, this was pretty drinkable, not a big sourness now but good.

Bottle at RBWG, thanks Beau! Love how my man from OH brought all the NC sours. I thought I had tried all the Natty Greenes’ sours but I’m glad to see that I had yet to have this one as it may be the best one yet. The others have all been boozy, oak, questionable sours and while this one definitely still needs some work, it’s got more tart, vinous, funky quality than any of the previous incarnations. Light tart cherry fruit, oak, dusty finish.

Bottle shared by SincereNC. Thanks for picking this up, Ian! Purty good effort from those dudes down in Greensboro, NC. A little high on the acetic side, but this seems to be the case in many American sours. Definitely a step in the right direction though. Keep working on it, yall.

Bottle #104 of 240. Bottled in September ’12. 22oz bottle split and shared with a friend on NYE. His first ’Sour’ so he was quite excited. Poured my allotment into a small tulip glass. This beer pours a cloudy ruby-tinted amber. A large billowy white head rests atop. Pretty lace sticks to the glass edge. Aroma is tart and funky. Wet wood, hay, sour fruits, just the slightest of vinegar burn. All wrapped up together, this is one potent little concoction. A nice velvety feel greets me, with moderate carbonation. A bit syrupy at times, but overall this has got a nice feel to it. This beer starts out with a mildly-puckering tartness, and as I sip, the tartness stays, but there’s also a subtle sweet character that joins forces making this a real treat! Flavors of pickle juice, vinegar, tart cherries, mild cranberry, all wrapped up in a woodsy oak-like flavor. I was really impressed with this one. My two favorite NG beers to date have been their ’sour’ beers, this one, and their Oak-Aged Farmhouse back in ’09. Now I need to get my hands on some of the 230th Anniv. Sour! Who wants to hook me up?

Originally reviewed: 11/15/09. Had this on tap for it’s final release at Stick & Stones in Greensboro. Came out a ruddy copper color with just a ring of foam around the edge on top. No lace present. Smells of fresh apples, some light barn funk, yeast, wisps of booze, cherries. Wow. The scent is wonderful on this beer. The mouth is bit on the light side. Some light carbonation present on the tongue. This is fairly slick going down. The oak presence smooths this one just right. Tart apples right off the bat on this beer. Nothing puckering, just a light sour beer that is very pleasant. Mild sweetness on the finish of cherry cobbler. Hop bitteress is low. I could drink these all night. Too bad this was the final night of this beer. Here’s hoping they bring it back one day.
