3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Onenote81 (902) - Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA - APR 27, 2012
Originally reviewed: 6/8/10. Had this on tap at the brewpub on 6/5/10. Came out a very dark black, with just wisps of ruby on the lower edges. Thick tan head. Great sticky lace. Scents of toasted malts, light coffee, dry husk. The mouth was creamy and smooth. Subtle carbonation noted. Dark chocolate abounds in this beer. Bitter black coffee dries the finish a bit. Slightly tart in spots.
Really good beer. I could have a pint of this anytime. Recommend.

Draught @ Raleigh brewpub. I don’t really like this style and I enjoyed this one more than most! Clean copper brown/black pour with ruby highlights. Diacetyl and roast, coffee and dark grain. Some burnt toast. Nice prominent and clean roast in the flavor, medium body with a good dark grain presence.

Draft. Black coloured beer with an average brown head and some fine carbonation. Buttery light malty and short roasted hinted aroma. Medium to light creamy palate. Finish is light buttery bitter and toffee hinted with a longer coffee/toffee sweet roasted hint.

Served on draft at the brewpub, 4/6/11. Pours a clear dark ruby color with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, sweet caramel, chocolate and milky notes. The taste is dry roasted malts, minty hops, tobacco and some toasted notes. Medium bodied. Nice.

1.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 Thorpe429 (3823) - Alexandria, Virginia, USA - APR 6, 2011
Reviewed from notes. On tap at the brewpub.
Poured black without much of any head and certainly no staying power. The nose brought light amounts of coffee and roasted malt, but then there was a sourness that took hold and did not work. I don’t know if this was a bad batch or if they were attempting to recreate the Guinness soured touch. Feel was fairly light and off. Overall, this just didn’t work for me.

On tap at Natty Greenes, Greensboro NC on 13 July 2006. Borderline black with a thick, creamy head. Obviously going for a Guinness look. Quite light mouthfeel with a dry, burnt malt bitterness. So going for a Guinness feel too. Not really any depth to the flavour. Didn’t do much for me.
2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 chandler0201 (602) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - JAN 26, 2010
Pours a dark black with cream head. Black chocolate aroma with milky notes. Flavor is very bitter and somewhat chocolate/coffee, yet finishes watery which was puzzling. Bad attempt at a Guinness style.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Dickinsonbeer (5075) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - JAN 19, 2010
Tap at Natty, Pours a nice deep dark black with nitro creamy head- dies down a bit. Black bittersweet oily chocolate flavor, green grassy hops, roast and harsh burn. Flavor is astringent and bitter with lots of roast, black patent and a bit of chocolate malt- a bit thin and harsh. Watery.

Tap at the brewpub on 2/2/08: Pours a semi-transparent dark mahogany brown with a nicely-lacing froth of light tan head. Aroma of sweet dark malts and a touch of milk chocolate. Body starts with decent full;ness and some dark caramel sweetness and a roasty malty bitterness for balance before a thinner dark chocolate finish. An authentic dry stout.
