2.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
At Natty Greene's in Greensboro. Dark gold, almost amber color (tough to tell...poor lighting!). Almost no nose. Taste is so-so. Some rye, malt and bitterness - but not particularly interesting. Meh.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pint at the Raleigh brewpub. Pours amber with a white head. The rye is very pronounced, which is welcome. Citrusy hops give it a little kick. The flavor is on the metallic side. It seems rough around the edges with blunt yeast and grain flavors, but the boldness of the rye saves it.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Originally reviewed: 11/25/09. This beer came out a deep dark copper color with a thin off-white head on top. No lace stuck behind at all. Smells of sharp rye grains, fresh bread, and a bit of honey.
Decent body backed up by a moderate amount of carbonation. Flavor profile of definitive rye, that started out a bit tart, but finished bready and filling. Some mild caramel backing in there as well. Hop presence was moderate with a good pop of bitterness on the finish. Nice beer.

Served on draft at the brewpub, 4/6/11. Pours a hazy copper color with a thin creamy white head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of sweet and spicy rye notes and floral hops. The taste is rye, floral notes, faint caramel malts, nutty notes and a bitter finish. Medium bodied.

Growler from brewpub. Pours a hazy orange with a little bit of a tan head. Aroma of toasty grain a little bit of grassy hops. Flavor is much the same with a lot of grassy hops and some hay. A little thin and unassuming but otherwise drinkable.

Slightly hazed orange/brown pour. Light malt with a hint of citrus on the nose. Caramel malt followed by a very nice bitter. Just a tad aggressive carbonation kept me from rating this very good drinker alot higher. I liked this beer.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a cloudy brown with a smallish off-white head that nonetheless put forth some very nice lacing. The Rye in this beer is quite apparent in both the aroma and flavor. The aroma was very doughy, like an uncooked biscuit, with a little bit of toffee and rye in the background. Lightly sweet, lightly tart, and tempered with a big bitter finish, this beer is an interesting complex treat.
