Our winter warmer ale is "gingerbread in a glass". Full-bodied, spiced with cinnamon, star anise, corinader, and orange peel. Citrus, tart finish.

On tap at Tylerís, Raleigh, just before Yule. Reddish brown pour of an indistinct quality, with a medium carbonation and head, very little retention. Nose is heavy Christmas cookie and malts. Reckon thatís what they were going for, though I continue to be suspicious of these kinds of beers unless itís cold out and the beer is called Anchor. Okay, thatís unfair but there was something so depressingly anonymous and confectionary about this beer that it didnít really seem like beer to me. And the little wit notes in the finish? Not for me.

Draft. Pours deep amber with an off white head. Light spicy aroma with coriander and sweet malts. The flavor has sweet and toasty malts, cinnamon-like spices, and some light citric notes. Pretty good.

Dark ruby copper with 1-2 fingers of light tan head. Nose is mild, light toasted grain and a cereal character with a subdued spice profile and light vegetal notes. Nice spice and malt character in the mouth. The spices are kept in check and donít overwhelm. Dry finish and light body.

Bottle. Very hazy reddish brown with a small white head. Nose is spicey--cinnamon and nutmeg up front, some orange peel lingering, anise. Some wet dog lingering. Flavor is similar, not overly spiced, but just sort of bland. But donít get me wrong, this is much more drinkable than I expected. A bit of citrus in the end, slightly soapy and spicy finish.

Very much like a brown ale with extra spices added in. Sweet, slightly smoky, with reasonable hop character.

Fruity, syrupy aroma like a sweet liqueur with hints of coriander and hoppy coolness. Dark brown and clear that gives way to orange in the light. Little head to speak of, off white with hints of beige. Sweet at the front that balances in the middle with bitterness before giving way entirely at the end. Medium feel with a bit of spice dance to the finish. Soda like body with soft carbonation. Great winter beer if the mood calls for something sweet but tempered. Paired well with a Polynesian dish we drank it with.

12 oz. from Bruisiní. Pours a rich red color with lots of carbonation and no real head. Aroma is sweet like cinnamon cookies. I mean, really it smells just like cookies. The flavor is also pastry- like with baking spices and a sweet, bready finish. I donít get the "tart finish" in the official description. This is not enough like beer for me to really enjoy, but I guess itís not awful. Though the spices are the primary flavor here, none of them are just beating me over the head.

On tap at Fullsteam from a bartender who told me it wasnít spiced. Címon, dude. Really? Pours dark ruby-tinted amber with a one-finger beige head. Nose of orange peel, cinnamon, coriander, and mild anise. Taste is less of the orange peel and more of the spice. Seems like the beer behind the spice is good, but damn it...

Draft. Dark brown coloured beer with an average off white head and some very light carbonation. Spicy and malty hinted aroma with hints of cinnamon, cloves and star anise. Very wintery like. Medium to full bodied palate. Finish is malty and spicy sweet bitter with a longer flatter herby taste. Good flavour, warming. Not bad.

12 ounce bottle from Lowes Foods in Hickory, NC, opened 4/7/11. Pours a clear copper color with a large frothy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. The aroma is bready and toffeeish with bitter hops and a nutty finish. The taste is toffee and big spicy notes. Faint hops in the finish. Medium bodied.
