3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
My friends Tom and Jen brought this one up from North Carolina. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured an orange-amber color with a large foamy orange-white head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was dry, floral and had a gritty herbal hop presence. The flavor was dryish with moderate floral and herbal hops and a light nutty undertone. The finish was medium length floral and herbal hops. Medium body. Ok.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz. Bottle. A great pale ale! I think some lower raters are comparing this to an IPA. As a pale ale, this is a fine brew. Burnt orange/bronze pour with a frothy white head and thick lacing. Sweet citrus hop scent, grapefruit with a spoonful of sugar, and a hint of pine in the finish. Light/medium bodied (a low point for me), sticky texture. If it were a little fuller in the mouthfeel, I’d have rated it higher. Hop taste right up front, citrus, and a tangy middle that reminded me of fruit loops! Bitter finish. Excellent!

On tap at West 94th Street Pub, Durham. Yeah, this is a pretty damn average APA and sadly short on the piney, hoppy, and citrus qualities advertised. This is hardly a craft beer destination, and it could just be that this keg is well past its prime. However, papery and malty in extremis.

Tap at Natty Greene’s. Pours clear copper amber with a small off white head leaving small laces. Aroma is sweet malty, a bit citric, piney and a bit grassy. Flavor is malty, bitter, citric, piny and a bit fruity. Finishes with a citric and bitter aftertaste.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a nice golden color with a moderate head. A little hoppier than I expected, but in a good way - you get the hops notes in both the aroma and the taste. Nice and light in the aftertaste.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Originally reviewed: 7/26/08. Poured a darker golden, like a light amber. This was darker than I thought it would be. Poured with about a finger-width head that settled to a nice sheet throughout the rest of the drink. Excellent webbing along glass edge.
Smelled the floral hops, maybe some corn. Toasted malt.
First thing I noticed with the taste is the smack of bitterness. This mellows as the drink warms. There’s a slight metallic bite at the finish that lingers a bit. Maybe getting a hint of lemon zest, and some burnt toast. Very crisp and clean brew.
Not that bad for an APA, but not my favorite.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Light lemon zest nose. Clear amber, thick sticky yellow head with good retention. Very tinny lemongrass flavor. Extremely metallic. Enjoyable, but has issues.

This is a great southern ale poured into a pint glass to a hazy and golden bliss big white foamy head disappears to leave nice lacing I’m sure it’ll still be there by the end of the glass ...taste of malts comes through at first then the hops kick in and give it a great citrus finish very clean and crisp all in all a damn fine pale ale....cheers
