Reviewed from notes. On tap at the brewpub. Pours golden yellow with a bit of a white head that quickly recedes. Nose brings some floral hops and some slight citrus notes. The taste brings forward some more of the malt. A bit of pale malt with some light bitterness. Decent body with good carbonation and slightly bitter. Decent hop flavors but nothing that’s terribly complex or over the top in any particular direction. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 10-29-2010

This beer pours a clear copper-gold color with a thin bone white head that evaporates quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of piney hops and sweet malt. Medium body with flavors of pine, earthy malt and muted hops. Touches of fruit too. The finish is hoppy with a short citrusy aftertaste. This bottle was possible slightly past its prime. Pretty average overall.

On tap at Natty Greenes, Greensboro NC on 13 July 2006 as Natty’s Pale Ale (noted at 5.2%). Mid gold colour with a thin white head. A pleasant, clean, fresh APA with plenty of bitterness and citrus fruit. Quite assertive. Maybe a little short of malt backup but hit the spot quite nicely. Crisp and quaffable.

Pours a mostly translucent golden amber with a small bubbly off white head. Aroma of floral and citrusy hops and just a touch of caramel. Some nutty/bready malt as well. Flavor of grapefruit, floral and other citrusy hop notes. Malt is minimal but there. Some caramel notes and a touch of nuts. Moderate bitterness for a pale ale. Crisp and refreshing. A solid and dry pale ale.

UPDATED: OCT 30, 2011 Bottle. Crystal clear golden color, slightly darker than a standard American lager. Medium white head sits around through the whole beer. Very fresh aroma of grain and a touch of hops. Flavor starts with some hop bite, then a thinly sweet body, and a sharp hop finish. I enjoyed the hopping of this well enough for a PA, but the malt base seemed a bit off and too thin. RERATE: After having an extremely fresh bottle, I’d say it’s over-the-top grassy, juicy hops for a pale ale. Still not a great malt base and the balance is off, but when fresh, it works as a hop fix without melting the tastebuds.

Tap at Natty. Pours a medium to deep copper.gold with a decent head. Aroma is buttery- diacetyl bomb- more of an english PA light biscuit and toast. Flavor is mod sweet toasty malts, biscuit, lots of butter, floral and grassy hops. Meh.

Draft at WBF Durham. Amber bodied. Short white head. Nose is citrusy hops, light caramel backbone, sweet malt and light pine. Taste is more pine and citrus with sweet malts, chewy caramel and pleasant hop bitterness. Body is medium with soft carbonation and light lingering bitterness. Ends with more caramel, citrus oils, piney hops and malt notes. Nothing extraordinary, but done well enough.

Sampled at WBF in Durham - poured a dark hazy golden color - aroma of hops, citrus and pine as you would expect. The taste was pretty typical of a standard APA as well. Nothing overly memorable from this ale.

Bitterness was a bit to low for my palate to call Southern Pale Ale "a true American Style" [Pale Ale]. Crisp beer nonetheless, enjoyed at the PTI airport before flying back to PHL.

Tap at the brewpub on 2/2/08: Clear effervescent bronze color with a frothy-lacing stringy off-white head. Aroma of lightly toasty caramel malts and some earthy grapefruity hops. Body starts lightly pale malty sweet with grassy piny bittering hoppiness. Finishes crisp and quite drinkable. A good APA.
