COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, full bodied Barley Wine with a wonderfully warming character from the malts & dark brown sugars. Held to the light, its burgundy color is fitting for a bigger beer that has aromatics that hint of the oak, the whiskey, the somewhat sweet nature, and molasses that makes this beer truly unique. Using Stranahan’s Whiskey barrels, we aged this beer for 6 months to impart a small amount of oak tannins and the whiskey character that combine to elevate this beer beyond its original entry into this world.

Bottle: Poured a light copper color ale with a small foamy head with limited retention and limited lacing. Aroma of clear whiskey notes with light warming alcohol and sweet malt notes. Taste is a bit too sweet for my taste with some warming alcohol notes and rounded edge from the barrel-aging. Body is about average with OK carbonation and light alcohol notes. Limited complexity with too much sweetness and good barrel–aging notes.

bottle at Coles Barleywine Contest 2015, pretty good, not too much BW notes but tasty. Almost a brett like flavor, fruity floral with some whiskey barrel aging notes. nice

Much more malty than barley wines I'm accustomed to. High abv not evident. Rich caramel color and aroma

Pours a rich copper color with beige head. Aroma is bread, some whiskey and a touch of candied figs. The mouthfeel is a little thin for this style of beer. I usually like a bit more legs on a BA barleywine. Some sweetness. Balanced. the booze is well hidden.

Bottle - Sweet vinous and plum notes. Clear dark copper with a thin white head. Sweet plum, light booze, caramel and light hoppy notes. Definitely American style, sweet and hoppy.

Thin white head atop a clouded brown body. Nose of leather and whiskey. Flavour of whiskey cask and vanilla with undertones sweet malt. Good.

Murky hazy brown with a big woody barrel note with slightly sour toffee. Big smooth flavor of oak, gentle whiskey and mellow dark toffee malt. Smooth and drinkable but nothing really stands out.

Bottle 750 ml. Bought in Redstone Liquor Sotre (Stoneham, MA) more than a year ago. Pours a beuatiful dark orange with tiny white head. Aroma is an exceptionnal mix of vanilla, caramel, mint, alcohol, tobaco, and whiskey. Taste is on par. Amazing warming alcohol. Beware of the high Abv. Among the good barrel aged BW.

"Whoa!! What a beautiful beer. A little different than a lot of whiskey barreled brews in that there’s still a great deal of hops coming through that provide a unique balance to the slight spice, tobacco, fruit, and bourbony vanilla flavors and aroma. Just loooved sipping on this one for a while. It was pricey, but totally worth it."

I am very glad I paid half price for this because this does not impress all that well. I imagine one more year will help mellow it out but it’s not worth the money. Nevertheless, the booziness comes through big time on the nose with whiskey and light vanilla. The palate is thin yet the body is sticky with molasses that has more whiskey but drops off hard; some acerbicness at the end too.

Full disclosure--I’m generally not a fan of beer aged in hard liquor barrels--if I want to drink scotch or whiskey or bourbon I’d drink that instead of beer--but I picked this up on special from a local store. Aroma is predictably boozy, with wood, fruit, and a little grassy hops. Flavor is the same, harsh and boozy with very little in terms of balance. Probably fine if you’re into this sort of thing, but I just find this gimmicky and harsh.
