COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black as night and every bit Imperial, this RIS was originally launched to tremendous accolades. Going further, this Stranahanís Whiskey barrel aged version meshes the rich chocolates, the coffee-like aromatics with the sweet whiskey nose and drying character of the oak. Slightly behind on the palette are the hops Ė held in restraint by the wonderfully full mouthfeel and broad flavors brought on by the perfect blend of so many malted barley varieties.

In short: An oaky and vinous impy stout with an awkward oaky sourness. Just ok.
How: Bottle 750ml. Consumed approximately 1 year after purchase.
The look: Black body topped by a medium tan head leaving lots of lacings on the glass
In long: Nose is heavy on the vanilla, with plenty of bourbon/whiskey and dark fruits. Taste is bit oily blackened malts, lots of vanilla, bourbon/whiskey, ripe dark fruits with a light fruity sourness, coffee blackberries, watermelons (!?!), a vinous character, strong oak presence. Relatively low roastiness for the style, this is more on the sticky-juicy side of things. The barrels do their usual job (vanilla, wood, etc.) but the barrels also seem to add a light awkward oaky Flemish Sour character to the beer which brings down my score. Well carbonated but overall very oily sensation. Named after Black Betty, the famous African-American work song, and if you ask me, a African-American is only good for one thingÖ being equal to white people in society! (you didnít see this one coming now did you?)

This pours an opaque black into the glass, with the deepest of mahogany-ruby hues to the fringes of light... if even that. The deep, dark chocolate head stiffs like ice cream as an initial cap, diminishing over time to create thick, rich pocked lacing down the glass. The bouquet is of chocolate and pie spices, with a hint of leather thrown in. Flavors are similar, with lots of mixed chocolates (sweet/milk vs. semisweet/dark vs. unsweet/bakerís), wood, tanned leather, LOTS of wet tobacco leaf, caramel, dark berries, tannins, nut skins and pits of dark fruits. Clean grassy bitters and lots of cacao bean finish the pull. The smooth, round body combines with a tart berry palate to form a substantive, yet actively complex mouthfeel. Lots of complexities going on here, and kudos for that!

Great beer right here. Not very viscious but one of those beers that was designed perfectly for barrel-aging. It is spiritlike at times, very caramally, nice cocoa, a desert-type stout.

Bottle. Pours a near black color with a fairly thick tan head. Nose has just a hint of sweetness with some roasting and subtle alcohol notes. Taste has a bit of bitterness to it with some roasting and a slight bit of bourbon. Fairly smooth, too.

750mL bottle, pours jet black with a small tan head. Aroma of deep dark roasted malts, mild whiskey barrels, a bit of chocolate and light espresso. Flavour is rich as hell, full of richly dark roasted malts, chocolate malts, whiskey barrels, and sweet brown sugar. Dense and rich as hell, very complex, and quite sweet as well as roasted. Becomes a bit cloying the more you drink, but itís a pleasure to drink.

Bottle... Pours nearly black with a small, creamy, cappuccino head. Fantastic retention. The bouquet is a luxuriant intermingling of deeply roasted malts, toasted tree nuts, moist brownies and gobs of fudge. Full-bodied and velvety with tickling carbonation. The flavor offers a boozy mishmash of bittersweet dark chocolate, singed caramel and ethanol. Finishes tongue-numbing and warming, followed by charcoal bitterness that clings to my palate for a good while. Bottle courtesy of landhoney!
