3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Beer 28 Asheville trip, draft at Thirsty Monk. Poured black. Aroma of chocolate malt, slightly woody, and boozy. Flavor is chocolate, a metric ton of wood, and booze on the finish. This actually got considerably better as it warmed. And also as my palate was numbed by the wood assault. I can see how some would really go for this, but a bit over the top with the barrel for me. In a sense this one scored higher than I actually cared for it.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Iíve been saving this for a special occasion - and since now U.S. women can serve in combat roles, I think thatís worth a toast! So, on to this here now brewski. Strong roast malt aroma has an oaky and whisky overtone, obviously from the barrel aging; it has notes of chocolate and caramel as well. Comes out of the bottle a rich sable just a whisker above jet black with a very thick and rather persistent tan head. Robust and rich flavor has firm tones of roast malt, chocolate, quality coffee, oaked whisky and licorice - may be whispers of toffee and horehound in there, too. Firm, smooth texture has some good fizz and leaves a smoky texture with a strong but not vicious whisky bite. Whoa Black Betty, bam-a-lam...

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On draft at Waldo Pizza. Opaque black with big pillowy khaki head with great retention and lacing. Caramel, vanilla, baking chocolate aroma with some coffee. Same flavors in taste with nice oakiness from barrel, alcohol apparent but not overwhelming, residual sweetness and a slight roasty bitter finish. Semi full mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Very nice beer. Great example of style and a barrel aged beer.

Picked this bottle up at Whole Foods, Pasadena. Pricey at $30. Pours very black with nice tan head. Wonderful mix of malts and burbons, followed by coffees and chocolates, with some well hidden vanillas. Slightly thin on the palate. Somewhat boozey with burn in the finish. Fine balance of flavors.

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Black Betty is full of flavor. Chocolate, coffee, dough, leather, earthy, alcohol, butterscotch, licorice, raisin, smoke, vanilla, woody. On tap at Greenman Brewery Asheville NC. I think the owner said it was $350 for a pony keg. My hat goes off to Nebraska Brewing for one of the better beers I have had in the barrel aged style. Does not have an overpowering whisky flavor. Awesome flavor and very smooth. Surprisingly easy to drink for 9%. Well balanced. It will keep you warm on a cold December night.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Great example of a barrel aged imperial stout. Aged about 18 months...pours black with coffee head. Smooth, chocolate, mild anise, some vanilla and a sticky finish. Bourbon is blended and smooth in this beer better than most barrel aged stouts. Really enjoyed this one.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Location/Date:Bottle split Dave on October 26th, 2012.
Appearance:Pours dark opaque with red head.
Aroma:Aroma of whiskey, roast, nice amount but not overdoing it.
Taste:Medium roastiness, light bitter, faint oak, whiskey/bourbon.
Palate:Medium body, light lingering aftertaste. Not slick like other IS. Covers alcohol well.
Summary: Thanks for sharing this one Dave! I really enjoyed this one because it was a balanced, not as super aggressive IS. The whiskey is there but not killer, which is really nice. Wish I could have this more often.Note: Iím shocked none of the people I follow on RB have had this yet. Wow. Yes, I know Dave will rate within two days.
