COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black as night and every bit Imperial, this RIS was originally launched to tremendous accolades. Going further, this Stranahan’s Whiskey barrel aged version meshes the rich chocolates, the coffee-like aromatics with the sweet whiskey nose and drying character of the oak. Slightly behind on the palette are the hops – held in restraint by the wonderfully full mouthfeel and broad flavors brought on by the perfect blend of so many malted barley varieties.

Black pour tan head .... aroma of oaky whiskey and light roasted chocolate ... taste of roasted malts, whiskey and sweet caramel, molasses, light chocolate and coffee .... oaky and a nice dry finish little thinner than I thought it would be but a really good imperial

Bottle thanks to thirdeye11. Nose reminds me of a fireworks stand. Dark chocolate, sulphur, a burnt tissue paper. Taste is like a liquid dark chocolate cordial.

Bottle shared by Paul. Enjoyed while sitting on the dock of the bay. The beer is black with a giant, foamy tan head that completely costs the snifter in lacing. The aroma brings a healthy whiskey presence, followed by roast, vanilla, and oak. The flavor is very whiskey forward, though not hot. Smooth and well balanced. Good stuff. The price is a bit steep at $25 per bottle. I would have this again. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 08-01-2011

750ml bottle. Pours dark, dark brown out of the bottle though it’s not completely black. It settles in under a huge mocha head, very thick, with good lacing and retention. Aroma has heavily roasted black malts, bakers chocolate and a ton of whiskey sweetness. Maybe some molasses and licorice as well, but the barrel is domninant. The whiskey also dominates the taste with lors of oak and vanilla alongside molasses. There is an underlying roasted malt backbone with some cocoa powder. Big boozy finish. The mouthfeel is slick and a tad light for the style though at 9% it’s not so surprising. Low carbonation. This is a solid BA stout but is pretty hot right now. The barrel is the dominant character with only faint impy stout notes underneath.

It pours dark black soot with an awesome creamy biege head. The ubtle aroma of whisky blended with roasty malts and notes from the barrel.. It tastes for me the smoothes whiskey barrel aged stout ever. There are hops blended on the palatenicely settling with slight warmness but so smooth and welcoming from the whiskey.

Bottle. Pours opaque black with thin, frothy tan head; decent retention and some lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, licorice, dark fruit, chocolate, whiskey, oak, and earthy hops. Flavor is heavy malt with average hops and some dark fruit esters; whiskey undertones throughout with a dry, chocolate finish. Medium body, carbonation, and warmth.

on tap Extraordinary, rich and complex malt, chocolate malt, some roast, huge head. Big black body. Roasty and whiskey aromas.. Thick and tasty. The 9% seems like 13% and wastes you. Also points for not being coffee based.
