COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Previously known as Chardonnay Blonde. Our first beer in the Reserve Series, Melange A Trois begins with a wonderfully big Strong Belgian-Style Blonde Ale and moves into the extraordinary category through an additional 6 month French Oak Chardonnay Wine Barrel maturation. The essence of Chardonnay permeates while a subtle sweetness remains from the Ale itself. Oak tannins combine to create a fascinating mesh of dry, sweet, and wine-like character. One of our favorites!

Trois poured a golden orangish color with a fluffy white head. Spotty lacing is left throughout the glass. The smell on this beer is fantastic. Belgian yeast, apples, pear, grapes, and oranges. The oak chardonnay barrels give off a nice grape aroma. Lovely. The taste is just as good if not better. Spicy yeasty bite up front. The fruits explode and the oak barrel does it’s thing. Slight taste of alcohol but it doesn’t interfere at all. A mixture of sweet fruit and tartness. The mouthfeel is nicely carbonated and light. I was sad to see this beer go. I would of loved to had another bottle of this stuff.

Pours translucent yellow with a small white head that has ok lacing. Nose is honey, lemon, orange, clove, oak. Medium sweetness at the beginning, later rather dry. Tannic. Fair bit of alcohol burn. Medium body, rather oily texture, moderately carbonated. I like it.

Appearance: Pours out a crystal clear, yellow-hued body with a foaming, tall, white head.

Smell: The chardonnay wine barrel treatment is simply bulging in the aroma, ahead of the lightly sweet-scented golden barley and hint of finely fragrant herbs and flowers giving a quality of hand-crafted artisan soaps, the kind people keep in an ornate bowl in the bathroom, are in small shapes, and you’re not allowed to use.

Taste: A wonderful blend of sweet, soft as cream barley and a great chardonnay with a gentle oakiness. Floral accents, a hint of citric lemon vanilla creme, and some perfumy touches. A little, bright ’pop’ of acidity. Light spiciness and some more oak showing on the wine spritzed finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Highly carbonated, very easy and breezy along the tongue.

Overall: The chardonnay character is pairing perfectly with the strong golden ale with just the right amount of carbonation. Hardly any showing of the supposed 10% alcohol. It’s outstanding all around. I know it’s early still, but can I go ahead and declare my favorite new beer of the year?

12/31/11. 750mL bottle courtesy scotchzi! Hazy orange pour with a creamy tan head that sticks. The aroma is a slam of Belgian yeast - fruity and funky - and there’s plenty of candy sweetness and just barely a hint of tartness. Something also reminds me of green apples. The flavor is also particularly Belgian - yeasty, fruity, and ever so slightly tart and woody. Not bad!

750ml from Sam’s. Finally bit the bullet on some of these Nebraska pricey fuckers. First one down and I have to say it’s a yummy beer. Faintly cloudy deep golden pour with a thick rocky head. Very ripe yeast in the nose, almost like fresh oven rolls with butter (but no diacetyl, Jack) along with sharp spice, lively blonde ale zing, and a nice woody complement from the Chard barrel. Body is nice to savor, just a bit of spice and heat on the palate. Taste is not quite as dry as I’d expected or hoped, and there’s more of that faintly yeasty and gamey thing coming through, just slightly too much perhaps. But it’s at that point that I realize, oh yeah, Cali buttery Chard. Good stuff.

Bottle purchased at the brewery. Pours a nice frothy that settles into moderate lace. Nose full of white wine and malt. Great effervescent mouthfeel, taste is a hodgepodge of fruit and malt. Tingly finish that lingers for just the right amount of time. Easily drinkable and even more enjoyable.

This is compliments of Paulo from the Archives, gracias. Poured with a nice, off white, fine, foamy, thick, frothy, off white head that lasts and plenty of lace. Color is a slightly hazy, burnished yellow amber. Aroma is a fragrant mix of yeast, fruit, hop, malt, bread dough. Flavor is much like nose with carbonic tang; yeast and carbonic tang standing out. Body is just as it should be, ditto carbonation.
