Melange a Trois begins with a wonderfully big Strong Belgian-Style Blonde Ale and moves into the extraordinary category through an additional 6 month French Oak Chardonnay Wine Barrel maturation. The essence of Chardonnay permeates while a subtle sweetness remains from the Ale itself. Oak tannins combine to create a fascinating mesh of dry, sweet, and wine-like character. One of our favorites!

Sampled at FoBAB 2010 (Chicago, IL). Pours a nice golden bright transpaarent hue, a nice frothy bright white head laces well. Aromas are wet oak and citrus, chardonnay fruitiness and light sweetness, sweet bread, touch of spice, mellow bready and pale malts, pear, apple. Initial is spicy, lighter bodied, pear and apple, wet bread, finish is dry and and mellow, champagne, light tartness with doses of citrus, apple, bread dough, light spice, oaky chardonnay with touches of peach, butter, and nuts coming through. The barrel really makes this beer. Finish is lovely, lingering oak and chardonnay, dry and fairly clean and refreshing with fairly deep complexity.

Sampled @ FoBAB 2010. Aroma of white oak, white wine. Taste is very strong of white wine, oak, yeast, very tart/sout and a great sour linger. Carbonation is velvety smooth, but overall pretty boozy.

25.4 oz bottle. Cloudy yellow brown with a big, clingy meringue head. Nose is chardonnay, yeast and oak with floral hints. Medium body with a faint sparkle. Taste is very vinous with strong chardonnay. Base brew adds yeast and grass blending nicely with the wine. Crisp and dry with a touch of lingering malt sweetness.

Bottle @ Papsø-Grand-Tasting, September 2010. Pours cloudy orange with a frothy white head and lacings. Brett, orange, fruit and oak. Very vinous. Full bodied. Dry end. Very tasty.

Huge thanks to daknole! Bottle pours cloudy gold with a dense white head. Aroma is strangely akin to a chardonnay, showing additional notes of belgian yeast and some underlying vanilla. Flavor shows the same with some supporting oak and toast. Overall body is moderate to full, moderately sweet, and has a dry, tart finish. Out of all the barrel experiment brews recently tasted, I can honestly say this has been one of the most interesting. It is amazing how well this beer integrates with the chardonnay barrels.

Cloudy gold pour, big fluffy white head. Aroma is crazy chardonnay! Unfiltered chardonnay and belgian yeast. Flavor tastes like Newton’s unfiltered chardonnay, very light bitterness, light prickly carbonation and some yeast. Good stuff. Really a cool beer.
