Melange a Trois begins with a wonderfully big Strong Belgian-Style Blonde Ale and moves into the extraordinary category through an additional 6 month French Oak Chardonnay Wine Barrel maturation. The essence of Chardonnay permeates while a subtle sweetness remains from the Ale itself. Oak tannins combine to create a fascinating mesh of dry, sweet, and wine-like character. One of our favorites!

Poured hazy yellow with slightly off white head, aroma brought notes of biscuit, grapes, some fruity pear and grass notes in there as well, hints of wine and slight funk. Taste is a mix of funky grapes and wine, going into sweet biscuit, white grape, some white fruit with pear and peach, finishing fairly dry and slightly tart. Nice stuff!

GABF 2011 Media Luncheon. Slightly hazy darkish gold, small white laceful head. Great aroma-creamy sweet yeasty bread tones, almost like cake batter, with a side note of lemon meringue. Huge body with a long linger, but also tastes all of it’s ABV. Very balanced with a mild sour tone. Lemon citrus, spicy hoppiness, soft Chardonnay tones, some wood, a touch of dark fruits, and a tinge of toffee. Pretty dang good.

750 ml bottle from 33. Pours a pretty much clear gold color with an inch of active, bubbly white head that sticks for a surprisingly long time and leaves trailing lace. Aroma of white grapes, oak (the chardonnay really pops here), sweet malts, and earthy grains. Flavor of chardonnay, with more grape and oak, sweet malts, mild spice, and some faint herbs and hay. Medium-bodied, with moderate soft carbonation and a smooth, vinous mouthfeel. Really nice.

750ml bottle from Steve’s Liquor and More in Madison, WI. Pours a very hazy, orange-gold colored body with a finger-width, dense, frothy and foamy, white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a great lacing throughout. Aroma is really nice. Lots of chardonnay and wet oak up front with a touch of apple and white grape tartness. Pears, a light citrus, lightly sweetened pale malts, a touch of bread, a hint of Belgian yeast spice, and florals. Flavor is excellent. Initially spicy with a bready pale maltiness. Plenty of oak with some hints of sweet vanilla that round the malts out along with a crisp white grape chardonnay that blends nicely. Some semi-tart apples, a light citrus, more pears, florals, a touch of grass, doughy Belgian yeast, and a hint of funk. The spice and light tartness kick it up a tad bit into the finish as this ends similar to a dry white wine with a really nice oaky, vanilla, and doughy yeast. The bready malt lingers very smoothly in a lengthy aftertaste along with the spicy yeast, florals, and mixture of fruits. Medium, very soft and smooth body with a moderately soft and somewhat lively carbonation. Overall, a pretty impressive and complex beer. Excellent feel on the palate. So smooth and clean with a very pleasant finish and no hint of the ABV%. Everything is perfectly balanced with a really nice mix of spices, malts, fruits, yeast, and just enough of a tartness to keep things interesting. The barrel aging on this is quite impressive. I really dug this one.

Shared at a recent DC tasting. Served in a SAVOR snifter. Pour yields a bright golden brew with a nice white head and a bit of lacing as it goes down. The chardonnay aging is really apparent in the nose, with that grape varietal being the dominant characteristic. Behind that is a bit of oak and accompanying spice, plus a bit of light fruit. Taste is somewhat tannic and brings along mild spice, hints of oak, and a good chardonnay presence. Good feel; I really like what they did with the aging here. I wish there were a bit more of the base beer, but I really enjoyed this. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 03-31-2011

Bottle. Pours a amber golden body with an off white head with modest retention. Malty body sweet body. Light grapes, hints of apples, over ripe fruit tones, orange rinds and a hint of oak. A lighter vinous note, seems more apparent amongst the warming. Light barrel, could go for a milder etoh, but still enjoyable.

750ml bottle pours a translucent, burnt orange with a creamy, bright white head. Nose is sweet, malty, floral, a little candy sugar. Flavor is apples, candy sugar, white grapes, a little wood. Full bodied, chalky finish. Decent.
