COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, full bodied Barley Wine with a wonderfully warming character from the malts & dark brown sugars. Held to the light, its burgundy color is fitting for a bigger beer that has aromatics that hint of the oak, the whiskey, the somewhat sweet nature, and molasses that makes this beer truly unique. Using Stranahan’s Whiskey barrels, we aged this beer for 6 months to impart a small amount of oak tannins and the whiskey character that combine to elevate this beer beyond its original entry into this world.

750mL bottle, no date from Beertopia in Omaha, for >$20. My label states 10.3%. Slightly hazy brown with orange highlights, and a half finger beige head, creamy with pretty decent retention. Lotta bourbon in the nose, fairly phenolic and spicy. Do I get some acetone as well? That ain’t right. There are also some brown sugar toasted malt notes, tinge of chocolate. Flavor follows suit--yes, I still get the acetone--lotta spicy phenols again. The booze still seems a bit harsh. There is some sweetness--of the brown sugar lightly scorched toffee type, but not too much. Dry finish, bitterness was earthy and a little ashy, peaking at a 3-3 1/2. Big full body with low carbonation. This was not a winner for me.

Poured with a medium sized off white, fine head and a little lace. Color was a slightly hazy amber, Aroma was malt, yeast, caramel, hop, solvents. Flavor what exactly like nose plus a little carbonic tang. Body and carbonation ok. Finish is like flavor and on the short side. No hint of alcohol.

750ml bottle served in a tulip. Pour is cloudy mahogany with two fingers of kaki head that had decent retention and a slight show of lacing. Nose is bourbon, oak, figs, molasses, caramel, booze, bubble gum, and hops. Taste is an immediate blast of bourbon/oak/figs/molasses done to the tune of decadence. This is quickly met with an odd bubble gum and hop pallet, that contradicts the original pallet with quite a ferocity. The finish is a choppy watered marriage with different aspects sticking out at different times, depending on how the tide swelled. This is truly and amazing barley wine, one I place in the top 3 (Gratitude and barrel aged Old Toad) that I could only accurately place if I did a side by side of the three. Truly amazing!

750 ml bottle from michael-pollack- thanks again, Pollack! Tried alongside a Black Betty and Melange a Trois. Pours a cloudy amber color with a small beige head. Aroma shows that yes, this was in whiskey barrels- big huff of whiskey, oak, vanilla, caramel, plums, and dates. Flavor somehow brings even more whiskey with a little warmth this time, along with vanilla, caramel, oak, dates, and some brown sugar. Medium-bodied, with a warming mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Wow, if you like whiskey you’ll like this. If not, stay away.

Aroma of toffee, berries and minty, citrus hop notes along with some whisky. The taste is toffee, berries, more berries, whisky and booze. Medium bodied.

Courtesy of markwise. Pours out copper with tan head. The aroma is pure whiskey with thin veins of vanilla and oak. I guess there’s beer in here somewhere too. Hmm. Don’t smell any beer. OK. The taste is all barrel booze, just like the nose, with straight up fortified whiskey, some vanilla and modest levels of oak. They did put beer in the barrel, right?

Bottle @ Dan’s house. Dark red violet appearance with a reddish white head. Moderate whiskey, red fruity, malty, slightly boozy nose. Somewhat boozy, moderate whiskey, well carbonated, quite malty flavor with hints of red fruits. Pretty flavorful but I find it a little strong and boozy.
