A sweet nose greets the adventurous in this marriage of our Black Betty Russian Imperial Stout and 50 year old American Brandy barrels. An elegantly pleasant surprise wakes the palate which migrates from a hint of Brandy into the wonderfully lingering roasted malt character.

"2 oz" draft bottle pour at SAVOR’s Friday night session. Poured a dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma was notes of smooth vanilla, roasted malts, dark chocolate and some cognac. Flavor was notes of smooth vanilla, roasted malts. Smooth, sweet. Alcohol is pretty well masked.

75cl, at 10%Vol, as Sexy Betty ’Aged in Brandy Barrels’, new exclusive American brew Anno 2013, thx alot to Dirk for sharing!, very complex Stout, heavily roasted/malty and slightly alcoholic/fruity/bitter, yet very balanced, cloudy, rocky head, very good brew, yet very expensive!

Draft sample at FoBAB 2013 pours opaque black. Nose roasted malt and chocolate. Taste lots of roast, then some chocolate. The brandy only tries to enhance the flavors, not overwhelm them. Smooth mouth feel.

750mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out rich roasted malt, brandy barrels, and wood. Flavour is super roasty, with loads of roasted malt, dry powdery unsweetened cocoa, and really not any of the brandy. The barrel aging is very subtle - I don’t get much if at all of the barrels. Very roasty, heavy impie stout. Excellent stuff.

Bottle @ Bailey’s Taproom’s The Upper Lip... Poured deep, dark, pitch black with a thin forming khaki head with mild retention of bubbles and lace. Awesome flavor of charred grains and toasted oats and barrel character. Earthy tones and a strong fruity, blueberry presence. Oak and brandy spirit came through without being too heavy. Complex and drinkable with a well rounded barrel character and nice roasted grain finish.

Bottle, picked up from Belmont Station. After the Cali Brandy Huna, it seemed only right to open the only other brandy barrel aged imperial stout I’ve seen. Pours dark brown with a thin ring of bubbles and spotty lacing. Aroma -- chocolate, bitter coffee, some dark fruits. Brandy is a little harsh on this. Metallic notes as well (bummer). Medium body, slick texture. Overall: okay. Probably better than okay, but tastings are rough for beers like this, I think, unless they come out early. Maybe in isolation, with plenty of time to get to know this Sexy Betty, I’d find more to like, and the rating may bump up a few tenths, but surrounded by so many others, this Betty is rather plain.

2/14/2014. On tap at Belmont Station in Portland. Pours black with a beige head. Thick and robust with boozy aromas. Roasted malt, chocolate, licorice and dark fruit. A bit sweet from the oak, but a lot of alcohol on the finish.
