A sweet nose greets the adventurous in this marriage of our Black Betty Russian Imperial Stout and 50 year old American Brandy barrels. An elegantly pleasant surprise wakes the palate which migrates from a hint of Brandy into the wonderfully lingering roasted malt character.

Bottle @ Bailey’s Taproom’s The Upper Lip... Poured deep, dark, pitch black with a thin forming khaki head with mild retention of bubbles and lace. Awesome flavor of charred grains and toasted oats and barrel character. Earthy tones and a strong fruity, blueberry presence. Oak and brandy spirit came through without being too heavy. Complex and drinkable with a well rounded barrel character and nice roasted grain finish.

Bottle, picked up from Belmont Station. After the Cali Brandy Huna, it seemed only right to open the only other brandy barrel aged imperial stout I’ve seen. Pours dark brown with a thin ring of bubbles and spotty lacing. Aroma -- chocolate, bitter coffee, some dark fruits. Brandy is a little harsh on this. Metallic notes as well (bummer). Medium body, slick texture. Overall: okay. Probably better than okay, but tastings are rough for beers like this, I think, unless they come out early. Maybe in isolation, with plenty of time to get to know this Sexy Betty, I’d find more to like, and the rating may bump up a few tenths, but surrounded by so many others, this Betty is rather plain.

2/14/2014. On tap at Belmont Station in Portland. Pours black with a beige head. Thick and robust with boozy aromas. Roasted malt, chocolate, licorice and dark fruit. A bit sweet from the oak, but a lot of alcohol on the finish.

Bottle. Pours solid black with minimal to no lacing. Aroma is alcohol, hint of roasted coffee. Taste is astringent brandy, bittersweet chocolate malt. I don’t find the two very complementary. Short, dry finish. I wanted to like this one so much more. Previous brandy barrel beers have been well received but this didn’t hit the mark as well. Not bad at all but not up to my expectation.

750-mL bottle. Sharp nose of rhubarb, anise, roasted malt, burnt plastic, dark chocolate, and slight brandy sweetness. Murky brown in appearance with no head. Sweet chocolate and brandy compete with soy sauce on the taste. Decent, but I like Black Betty better.

One of the best beers that i have spent some coin on. It pours very dark with a nice colored head. Smells like hints of brandy, chocolate and slight fruity notes. Taste of chocolate with coffee notes, slight fruit, slight oak and brandy. Pretty strong brew so it was a sipper. Great beer.

Bottle at home. Pours opaque, light absorbing black with a large, frothy tan head, long retention with good lacing. Aroma is roast, chocolate, and coffee malt, perfume and pine hops, dates and figs, prunes and licorice with vanilla, alcohol, and oak. Flavor is sweet dark malt, vanilla, brandy, oak, figs and dates, spicy hops and light bitterness with a sweet finish. Full body and medium carbonation.
