Pours black with a little red around the side and a small light brown head. Large roasty java note on the nose, milk chocolate, caramel, an earthy and almost grassy note, and oak. The taste is booming with super rich dark chocolate and dark roasted coffee, there is a tobacco note, maybe a hint of leather, coconut, caramel, oak and bourbon. Very full bodied, very heavy stout. The barrels just sort of accentuate a lot of the already delicious flavors.

2014.02.01 - Nectar Ales Blank Xantus - 22oz (?) bottle in tulip glass. Bottle not marked but presumably 2013 vintage. Aroma: coffee, chocolate, vanilla Appearance: Pours super dark, little if any light gets through, little if any highlights. Very little head, a brief attempt that fizzles quickly. Taste: espresso, coffee, chocolate/cocoa Palate/Mouthfeel: not nearly as creamy or heavy as one would expect. It’s moderately creamy, and pretty slick light mouthfeel. Black pour with a nice khaki head that slowly fades down to a film. Great lacing. Aroma is sweet milk chocolate, dark chocolate, coffee, fudge, vanilla, and molasses. Taste has a ton of different flavors all mingling with each other well. Chocolate, coffee, caramel, vanilla, and bourbon are all in there and show through at different times with each drink. Slick velvety texture. Alcohol shows as a slight warmth on the way down. This is a fantastic beer.

Tallahassee, Fl - ABC Fine Wine & Spirits - Betton - 22 oz bomber. Pours a viscous, tar-like dark black with a thin but persistent mocha colored head. Aroma is full of chocolaty goodness with a hint of Kahlua, some creosote roasted notes. Flavor is delightful with a heavy dose of bittersweet chocolate up front, some deep dark espresso notes, a touch of licorice to round it out. Mouthfeel is thick and rich. Superb.

Black Xantus, this season, has been reduced to a stout much like all other mediocre stouts! It is no longer complex with full-bodied flavor! I purchased the beer in two distinctly different locations with similar results. What has happened to the brew? So very disappointing! Not worth the price. Thank goodness Goose Island Bourbon County Stout made its brief appearance to the west coast so that I could once again delight in a magnificent stout!
