Black Xantus is a rare bird and the first new release from Nectar Ales in Years. It is the First ever “big-beer” to be released under the Nectar Ales line. Barrel aged for 6 months in combination of Bourbon, retired Firestone Union and wine barrels and Infused with fair-trade, organic coffee from local roaster Jobella. Rich bourbon and coffee aromas greet the senses. Complex chocolate and tobacco flavors fill the palate. This beer displays a full-bodied mouth-feel and an overall balanced presentation. It would be a perfect pairing to rich chocolate desserts.

Tallahassee, Fl - ABC Fine Wine & Spirits - Betton - 22 oz bomber. Pours a viscous, tar-like dark black with a thin but persistent mocha colored head. Aroma is full of chocolaty goodness with a hint of Kahlua, some creosote roasted notes. Flavor is delightful with a heavy dose of bittersweet chocolate up front, some deep dark espresso notes, a touch of licorice to round it out. Mouthfeel is thick and rich. Superb.

Black Xantus, this season, has been reduced to a stout much like all other mediocre stouts! It is no longer complex with full-bodied flavor! I purchased the beer in two distinctly different locations with similar results. What has happened to the brew? So very disappointing! Not worth the price. Thank goodness Goose Island Bourbon County Stout made its brief appearance to the west coast so that I could once again delight in a magnificent stout!

2013 bottle. Strong, boozy nose of bourbon, oak, coffee, and sweet molasses. Pours flat obsidian color with a dark khaki head. Lovely coffee and malt-forward taste with malted milk, sweet chocolate, a hint of cinnamon and allspice, and a slightly hot bourbon finish. Moderate body for a stout. An old standby.

Aroma is dark malts, coffee, barrel age/fruit and a hint of heat. The flavor is dark fruit/vinous, malts, coffee, fruit/barrel aging and a mix of sour/tangy/alcohol in the finish.

Dark fruit up front. Transitions into prickly heat. Roasted barley, toffee, more dark fruit, dark sugar syrup, oak, some bourbon element. Coffee picks up in the end, but it's much milder than I thought it would be. Alcohol warmth helps the dark fruit to shine. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22oz bottle. Shared with friends, over a game of Catan. Black color. Kind of dark brown / red. Head fades to minimal pretty quickly. Good spread and dots of lace. Bigger body. Good, chewy thicker texture. Lighter, smooth carbonation. Lightly slick. Good dark fruit, big roast, dark chocolate, light molasses. Bigger dark fruit, and light noticeable molasses. A big, chewy imperial stout for sure. Big bitterness. Light sweet. Gets very sweet as it warms up. Alcohol is pretty well-hidden, no bite at all here. Solid, big robust imperial stout. A lot more dark fruit, molasses, and sweet than I like though. Light sweet bite becomes more noticeable as I go. Awesome big thick texture, though, friends agree, pretty sweet, with some significant molasses and licorice character (that no one ever really cares for). Greg said Teriyaki sauce... Not sure I agree, but I’ll note it

Bottle shared by my friend. He said it was like $6. Black pour, aroma of smooth bourbon and vanilla. Taste is a straight up solid bourbon stout. Vanilla, touch of chocolately malt. Very smooth, no burning. This is a very competitive style, but for this price you cant beat it.
