Black Xantus is a rare bird and the first new release from Nectar Ales in Years. It is the First ever “big-beer” to be released under the Nectar Ales line. Barrel aged for 6 months in combination of Bourbon, retired Firestone Union and wine barrels and Infused with fair-trade, organic coffee from local roaster Jobella. Rich bourbon and coffee aromas greet the senses. Complex chocolate and tobacco flavors fill the palate. This beer displays a full-bodied mouth-feel and an overall balanced presentation. It would be a perfect pairing to rich chocolate desserts.

One hell of an American imperial stout. Boozy aromas float up from the glass. Thick, black pour. Complex and long on the palate, but with a shot of bitter hops at the end. Beautifully roasted and rich.

Bomber, 2014 vintage. Rich dark chocolate malt aroma with notes of roasted malt, molasses and red wine. Pours oily black with one finger of light brown head with good retention and lacing. Starts with rich dark chocolate malt flavors with notes of molasses and roasted malt with a really thick body and viscous mouthfeel. Finishes really smooth with dark chocolate notes melding nicely with some light red wine flavors. Excellent imperial stout!

18 Feb 2015, tap. ruby/black. nose reminds me of barley wine - sweet malt, alcohol, almost winey. this has much more of a toasted malt profile. med body and mildly fizzy. burnt toast, some raisins, some tobacco, mild alcohol. it’s okay. it’s too sweet and wet for me to think about it as an imperial stout. it’s too dark and toasty for me to think about it as a barley wine. odd mix of styles. and it is only mediocre as a beer regardless of style.

Bottle. Deep brown-black body, thick, slowly dissipating, dense light brown head. Very rich, sweet nose with lots of raisin and fig, coffee bean, toasted marshmallow, bourbon and tannic oak and some alcohol warmth. The body greets the palate with some prickly heat before quickly opening up to rich, layered plums, figs, grape, and coffee beans, finishing with more prickly heat. Sticky with a dense sweet flavor profile. Reminds me of Bell’s Expedition Stout, which is never a bad thing. In fact, a very good thing. Fantastic beer!

22oz bottle aged since 2012. Pours darkest brown with a tan head. Huge bourbon aroma. Initial notes of bourbon and alcohol but as it warms more complex flavors start coming out that include coffee, chocolate, molasses. licorice, dark fruits. Alot going on here. This is a big one.

Pours opaque dark-chocolate brown with a thin but serviceable tan head. A bit of ruby-brown light peeps through at the bottom. Aroma almost defies deScription. Lessee - chocolate, roast coffee, smoky malt, hints of wine and molasses. Flavor has bold strokes of wine-soaked wood, smoky malt, chocolate, bitter woody hops, and molasses; sweetness nicely balances bitterness. This is one substantial beer, not for delicate palates! Texture is firm and viscous, if none too fizzy; it leaves a smoky mocha finish. The heck with traditional desserts - make this your dessert. (You may need to call a cab, though!)

Smooth cocoa aroma with some minor vanilla and roasty almond. Light tan head and very dark brown body. Dark roasted dry cocoa and sight warm vanilla and minor coffee notes. Smooth and creamy on the palate

My 900th rating! Rated 1-17-15 apt in friona texas. Pours a midnight black color with a thick creamy head. Complex aromas meet the senses of brown sugar, molasses, chocolate, fig, slight wood and slight smoke. Flavors bring chocolate, slight alcohol, brownie, slight wood, light coffee, slight vanilla, caramel. Medium to high sweetness. Mild alcoholic burn in the nose. The sweetness becomes slightly cloying at times. Overall I like the chocolate brownie like flavor overall. See you next year rate beer. To the home brew cave for me!

Bottle from the Bier Stein, Eugene. Pours a rich dark brown/black, little but of tan head. Nose roasty, oak, coffee, vanilla, just lovely. Body medium roasty, with coffee notes, slightly hot, but just a lovely beer all around, one of the best "shelfies" out there.
