Black Xantus is a rare bird and the first new release from Nectar Ales in Years. It is the First ever “big-beer” to be released under the Nectar Ales line. Barrel aged for 6 months in combination of Bourbon, retired Firestone Union and wine barrels and Infused with fair-trade, organic coffee from local roaster Jobella. Rich bourbon and coffee aromas greet the senses. Complex chocolate and tobacco flavors fill the palate. This beer displays a full-bodied mouth-feel and an overall balanced presentation. It would be a perfect pairing to rich chocolate desserts.

Delicious cherry, alcohol, chocolate, slight banana on the nose. Thin head dissipating quickly to leave an inky black liquid. I’m looking for a bit more head in a stout. Taste is very sweet, with a slight bitter edge. Mouthfeel is very syrupy, very low carbonation. Overall a solid sweet imperial stout if you drink with eyes closed, but the presentation could be greatly improved.

Bottled@Chriso "Donkey Dork Lord" pre-gbbf shindig 2011. I think this rating might take the price for me in hard encryption on my rating. More or less pitch black colour with a small beigeish brown head that vanishes quickly. Aroma is roast, alcohol, coffee and liquorice. Flavour is coffee and roast. Big and beautiful imperial stout. 65cl, exclusive American brew, with coffee, thx to Secret Santa!, very complex sweet Stout, roasted/alcoholic and slightly fruity/spicy, heavy, yet balanced, hazy, small head, very good brew, yet very expensive!

A - Pours a very dark brown color with a finger of frothy chocolate colored head. The head fades down fairly quickly leaving behind some lacing. S - Aroma is a mix of roasted dark chocolate and coffee with some dark fruit, black licorice, vanilla, oak, Bourbon, and a bit of booze. T - Starts off with some roasted dark chocolate flavor with some dark fruit, black licorice, and vanilla. Through the middle, roasted coffee flavor comes through with some oak, Bourbon, and molasses. The finish is a mix of roasted coffee and dark chocolate with some Bourbon, black licorice, molasses, and a bit of booze. M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth and creamy with a warming, roasty, and sweet finish. D - Very drinkable. Nice Bourbon barrel aged coffee forward stout. The balance is really nice and it is quite smooth.

Sampled at EBF. Been wanting to try this one for a while and I was glad I got the chance in Boston. Super dark color, thick and syrup like. Pleasant aroma of chocolate, fudge, smokieness and bourbon. Very easy to sip on considering it’s 11%ABV. Quite a treat.

Bottle shared by Lunch. Thanks Paul! The beer appears a very dark shade of brown. There is about a half inch of head atop the beer that leaves some decent lacing on the glass. The aroma is very enticing, with scents of rich, roasted malt and a nice sweetness. I thought this beer was great, and was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it. The mouthfeel is my favorite aspect of this beer. The beer is rich and thick, and totally coats the palate. I would really like to have some bottles of this delicious beer in my cellar.

Bottle at Toronado SF. Pours a pitch black color with a roasted looking head. Aroma is of coffee, roasted malt, dark fruits, oak, whiskey and dark chocolate. The flavor again has lots of coffee, some dark fruits, roasted malt, oak, whiskey, dark and sweeter chocolate. The body is full with a creamy mouth feel. Overall a pretty good Imperial Stout.

Solid black pour w/ little head. Huge aromas of coffee, dark chocolate & alcohol. Big, complex flavors! More coffee & bitter chocolate up front. Getting some dark cherries & prunes in there, too. Bourbon & tobacco, but only after it warmed a bit. Creamy vanilla, then a little bite from the alcohol at the end. Oily, thick mouthfeel. 11% ABV is hidden pretty well. All in all, a great, big and underrated stout. Glad I found this one!
