COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black Xantus is a rare bird and the first new release from Nectar Ales in Years. It is the First ever “big-beer” to be released under the Nectar Ales line. Barrel aged for 6 months in combination of Bourbon, retired Firestone Union and wine barrels and Infused with fair-trade, organic coffee from local roaster Jobella. Rich bourbon and coffee aromas greet the senses. Complex chocolate and tobacco flavors fill the palate. This beer displays a full-bodied mouth-feel and an overall balanced presentation. It would be a perfect pairing to rich chocolate desserts.

The bottle poured black with an amber hue, quickly fading rlight brown head with fine bubbles and fair lacing. Aromas of fig, cherries, anise and smoked woody notes. Flavors are of sweet dark fruits followed by woody notes, undertones of bourbon, coffee and bitter chocolates. The finish is dry and bitter with a lingering sweetness. There is an off flavor that I can’t but words to but have tasted in Firestone Walkers, DBA, DDBA and North Coasts, Old Stock Ales. This one would be good for aging a few years!

From a 650 into snifter. Pours black with just hints of light coming through with an amber tint to it, medium fine head with soapy spots spread through it. Nose is intense dark dried fruits, fig, raisin, dates, licorice, caramel, malted barley. Very smooth body, medium to high sweetness, low bitterness to start moving to a nice moderate bitter finish, a bit of booze at the back of the throat, full bodied. There is a bit of pine in the finish, with more dried fruits. Good, but just not hitting the right spots for me, doesn’t seem very cohesive.

Pour is black with red hue, khaki head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, booze, vious notes. Taste is big coffee, vinous notes, an interesting blend of tanins, vanilla and coconut from the bourbon barrels and whatever the retired union barrels bring. Full bodied, 11%, can’t tell.

22oz 2014 vintage bottle pours dark briwn black with a finger of light tan head. Nose is pretty nice with some dark charred fudgey roast, some dusty coffee, oaky vanilla cream, and soft fruity wine. Taste is medium bodied, pretty nice blend of flavors, subdued but with decent complexity of bitter chocolate cherry, coffee bean, wine, and vanilla. Finishes with a dash of fruity sweetness and bitter roasty dark cocoa dust. Nicely done.

[2/12/15] Draught at The Sycamore in San Francisco. Black with a tan head. Big coffee beans aroma with some roast and wood. Bitter roasty flavor with some sweetness, lots of coffee and vanilla. Quite full-bodied.

Shared bomber, snifter. Bourbon/coffee/chocolate characters were all subtlety displayed. Smooth, smooth, smooth. No booziness. Very nice, really like it.

Interesting brew.. deep lingering tones of tobacco and malt. Some front light coffee taste but no aroma. Very high abv but not in your face with it. Pretty good brew for sure.

It pours black with a brown head that produces a lot of lacing. It has coffee and roasted aromas with bourbon and alcohol with smokey notes. It flavor combination of bourbon and coffee is complex and pleasant. It has a smokey taste and a wee bit of chocolate. The bit a bitter tinge on the palate.

Super dark. Super thin head. Very boozy. Woody, some bourbon flavors. Not my favorite stout.

Not a roast bomb, nice and complex. I can taste the wine barrel. Just the right amount of coffee, not overwhelming. Beautiful black color with virtually no head. Drinkable at 11%. Good offering from a brewer that’s not known for their imperial stouts.
