COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black Xantus is a rare bird and the first new release from Nectar Ales in Years. It is the First ever “big-beer” to be released under the Nectar Ales line. Barrel aged for 6 months in combination of Bourbon, retired Firestone Union and wine barrels and Infused with fair-trade, organic coffee from local roaster Jobella. Rich bourbon and coffee aromas greet the senses. Complex chocolate and tobacco flavors fill the palate. This beer displays a full-bodied mouth-feel and an overall balanced presentation. It would be a perfect pairing to rich chocolate desserts.

Picked up a bottle mostly based off of Firestone Walker’s rep, $15. Standard stout appearance, the first glass I poured had a head but each subsequent refill did not. Aroma was weird, peanuts, touch of whiskey (or bourbon), and astringent alcohol, not nice. The flavor was better, very subtle coffee notes, whiskey and a really cool peanut butter and chocolate combo. Overall I was pretty let down by this after loving FW barrel aged beers. Maybe this was an old bottle and the coffee has faded? edit: just checked the bottle and it is dated 08/30/12 so this was not an old bottle by any means bummer Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-17-2012 17:30:31

Draft at Gnarly Barley. Pours nearly pitch black in color and topped a thick head of tan colored foam that slowly recedes to a thin film. The aroma shows notes of dark chocolate, espresso, hints of bourbon from the oak, and sweet vanilla and a touch of roast. The flavor follows with more dark chocolate, espresso, and oak laden vanilla. Just a touch of toasty bitterness on the back end. The bourbon barrel seems to smooth things out, but the bourbon flavor isn’t quite as noticeable in the flavor. Full bodied and smooth with subtle carbonation leading to a lengthy finish. This one was on the sweet side for me and needed some more bitterness to balance things out. Still a nice barrel aged stout.

Bottle. Great aroma. Dark chocolate, brownies, coffee, burnt marshmallow, and tobacco. Tastes very chocolaty with lots of coffee, tobacco, dark fruit, nuts and marshmallow. Also get some light red wine and oak. Light sweetness throughout. Some spicy hops in the finish too. Great stout.

Average appearance but excellent flavor and body. Flavor is nicely bittersweet with the bourbon, roast, and cocoa to perfectly compliment. Body has a round fullness yet enough carbonation to balance and boozy warmth to remind you of its power. Good stuff.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong roast and coffee. Medium mouth, rich chocolate malt, light wood and bourbon with nice boozy finish, very good.

Near black with little head. Coffee and a slightly smoky bacon aroma. Rich coffee and caramel, slightly boozy but very nice. Oak and almost a light chili, despite not having any. Very delicious.

A very good imperial stout. Pours a beautiful deep red-black with a thick tan head. Smells of vanilla, coco, malts. Taste is very creamy and boozy, with lots of vanilla, cinnamon, a bit of hops in the finish, and a whiskey-like booze in the after taste. Had on tap at Billcos.
