3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Picked up a bottle mostly based off of Firestone Walker’s rep, $15. Standard stout appearance, the first glass I poured had a head but each subsequent refill did not. Aroma was weird, peanuts, touch of whiskey (or bourbon), and astringent alcohol, not nice. The flavor was better, very subtle coffee notes, whiskey and a really cool peanut butter and chocolate combo. Overall I was pretty let down by this after loving FW barrel aged beers. Maybe this was an old bottle and the coffee has faded?
edit: just checked the bottle and it is dated 08/30/12 so this was not an old bottle by any means bummer

On tap @ Chuck’s 85th. Pours deep brownish black with thin oily mocha-colored head. Aroma is dark charred roasty malts, lighter notes of dark chocolate, soy sauce, and coffee. Taste is similar, though the dark chocolate, mocha, and espresso notes come on much quicker and stronger. Mouthfeel is a bit lighter than expected, but does not affect the taste as tons of rich flavors come through. Some notes of port and bourbon on the finish, though not the huge barrel-aged flavors you often see in the style. Amazingly rich imperial stout.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Poured an opaque dark brown with near zero head. Aroma of raisins, sweetness, wood, whiskey. Taste is heavy up front with whiskey, chocolate, raisins, transitions to booze laden oakiness and finished with taste of wet coffee grounds. Large, very large taste and an interesting ride from front to middle to back.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark tap with about a quarter inch of tan head. Slight coffee aroma but not much else. Sweet taste with heavy dark fruits and undertones of mocha and caramel. The taste reminds me of a sweet stout more than an imperial stout. They did a great job of hiding the 11% but missed on the Imperial Stout taste.

0.9 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 1/20
UPDATED: JUL 20, 2014 red-sepia, white head drops to ring. Nose is toast and burnt sugar, minor cardboard oxidation. Flavor is FUCKING SWEET, light berry and licorice masked by burnt sugar notes that go front-back, dusty cardboard in the dead, slick finish, some heat showing. Literally, I gagged on both sips. Confirmed this was the right beer. Took a third sip and gagged again.

Moca, Moca, Moca! Sweet, rich, deliciousness.
I don’t even like coffee...not the smell, not the taste, but this was one of the most incredible taste experiences of my life.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Had high expectations for this but unfortunately was a little disappointed. Smells really good like a nice roasty coffee stout base with bourbon and a little funk, I’m assuming from the wine. The only real problem I have with this beer is that the wine takes away from the delicious roasty coffee and bourbon that I love so much in stouts. I think this beer proved to me once again that wine barrels belong to wilds, sours and belgian style beers for my taste.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: JUL 3, 2014 Draft at Moriartys. Tulip. Pitch black pour with a solid off-white head that quickly reduced to almost nothing. Huge dark malts. Heady alcohol taste. Bourbon. Liquorice. Turkish coffee. The red wine barrels bring a slippery enveloping edge to the palate. All the notes are good, though it feels entirely due to the barrels and not the underlying beer.
