Black Xantus is a rare bird and the first new release from Nectar Ales in Years. It is the First ever “big-beer” to be re- leased under the Nectar Ales line. Barrel aged for 6 months in combination of Bourbon, retired Firestone Union and wine barrels and Infused with fair-trade, organic coffee from local roaster Jobella. Rich bourbon and coffee aromas greet the senses. Complex chocolate and tobacco flavors fill the palate. This beer displays a full-bodied mouth-feel and an overall balanced presentation. It would be a perfect pairing to rich chocolate desserts.

10/26/09 notes: on tap, LA Beerfest. One of the anticipated offerings of the fall, thanks for bringing it out to play Firestone! Color is intensely black. Nose has espresso, black chocolate, and ash. Flavor is initially quite harsh, a bolt of semisweet chocolate, and dark malt. Roasted malt comes out through the middle, then moves the direction of ash. Upon subsequent sips, I am impressed by a subtle red-wine flavor that seems to creep into this beer almost imperceptibly. As the strange ash flavor became distracting in the finish, I found myself wishing the vinous note was stronger. Did not reach my upper-echelon of Imperial Stouts, but with some age this beer might mellow and become delicious.

Almost pitch black on the pour. No head at all. Not much lacing going on with the glass either. Strong bourbon on the nose along with subtle chocolate smells as well. I taste chocolate, dark malts, bourbon, coffee and a hint of caramel hiding in there somewhere. Nice beer, not what I was expecting. Almost seem too light bodied in my mind to be called an imperial stout.

Let it be known that I have had two different experiences at two different events. The first was had a crayola waxy type finish that got in the way of the flavor, rating 2.7 Black pour. Nice sweet malt, java, chocolate aroma with some bourbon overtones. Flavor is a nice mesh of coffee, sweet vanilla, and bourbon. Nice! Rating: 3.9

Thanks to Exiled for sharing this beer. Beer pours black with a tan head. The aroma is sweet, with a little bourbon as well as some vanilla and raisins. The taste is a strong mix of vanilla and milk chocolate. You also get a little bourbon and oak character. The beer has a thick, creamy mouthfeel and is very good.

Bottle. Blackish beer with a tan head. Bourbon and rich malt aroma with light roast. Malt and vanilla flavor with bourbon, light roast, and caramel. Fuller bodied. Vanilla lingers with light roast, malt, and caramel. A bit strong on the vanilla.

Bomber shared by Rciesla- also tap at BT- combined ratings- although about the same. Pours a deep dark oily black with a decent tan head. Aroma is initially quite buttery, diacetyle- with lots of buttery oak and vanilla, bourbon and high alcohol as it warms- oily, licorice and anise spices, minty roast and charred burnt chocolate- some leather earthiness- gets a bit tobacco like as well. Tobacco and bourbon flavor, toast, moderate sweetness lots of char, roast, some coffee, high alcohol booziness, and a sharp finish- Ok.

This beer shared courtesy of BeerandIT. Pour is a rather dark with an almost no carbonation or lacing. Aroma has a strong dark fruit to it like raisins and prunes, much like Dogfishead’s World Wide Stout. Taste has some licorice, chocolate and bourbon, though the coffee seems to be almost nonexistent despite the description. The bourbon barrel burn is quite prevalent on the aftertaste. This really is more like a black ipa that was aged in a bourbon barrel, especially because the body is quite light for an imperial stout. Its still an interesting beer, just a little off base in terms of style.

Thanks to joenuegs for this one! Black viscous pour. Thin tan head. Roasty with hints of vanilla and sherry. Chalky mouth-feel. Roast, coffee, and hints of fennel. Finish is dry. Not bad by any stretch but just like all the others. It is what it is...
