COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions. (Editorís Note: originally brewed by the Humboldt Brewing Company until their acquisition by Firestone Walker)

a dark pour, the toasted malt flavors dominate, drinkable and fine but not really my style, probably just not a fan of hemp ales but this beer was alright

What better place to have a hemp ale then in San Francisco, right in the Haight. Thatís where I had this one: pours a darker copper colour with a fairly large head. aroma was sweet and enticing, floral and vaguely reminiscent of the green. Taste was tolerable, but i wasnít overly impressed with this beer unfortunately. i expected more. Taste was acidic, light fruitiness and sort of watery in the finish.

A tasty ale thatís got nothing to do with herbs or vegetebles, as far as I can taste anyhow. Thick body with a pleasant taste and finish. Just not my bag. There are so many of these beers that all taste so similar. Mine is by Humboldt Brewing Company, but says itís from Paso Robles, which is a contradiction indeed. Also mine has a different label, one thatís kind of hippyish in image, perhaps for reasons more obvious than not. Good aftertaste Iíll say, which is not so common.

This black ale poured with decent tan head and a malty aroma. The head disappeared quickly and so did the flavor - a bit of malt with a sour bitter finish. There are surely better hemp products out there.

Bottled. A deep red beer with an orange head. The aroma is sweet hoppy and grassy. The flavor is sweet malt with notes of fruit, plumbs, and over ripe fruit.

22. Brown with thin gray film. Mild nutty, woody nose. Medium, slightly bubbly body. Indistinct mid-palate of wood, caramel. Very little tang of nutty, slightly sour hemp oil. Light finish. Definitely the most interesting thing about this beer is reading the label to find out whatís in it. Not sure where theyíre getting the "toasted crystal malt flavor," but there may be a joke there I am missing.

Pours murky brown with an off-white head. Dank malty aroma with the noticeable vegetable-hemp aroma. Same goes for the taste. BIg caramel malt flavors mixed with peppery hops. The straw/vegetable/hemp flavor is throughout, but doesnít really add anything in a positive way.

Draught at Woodstocks IV. Dark brown with a medium beige head that laces the glass. Roasty and toasty aroma with some herbal quality. The flavor is between a brown ale and a porter, with some chocolate roasted bitterness showing, but remaining pretty smooth. The hemp is subtle, as has been every example Iíve had, but it adds a nice dimension, and makes for an interesting and drinkable darker ale. medium to lighter body and lighter carbonation.

Iíll rate this for historical purposes. One of the gateway craft beers, along with Red Tail and Arrogant Bastard, back in the day. Used to go through a couple pitchers of this at a time at the Tilted Stick because Chip had a tough time giving this stuff away because it was too different at the time. I flocked to it.

There was that time I put my clothes in the wash at the launderette next door to the Stick and decided Iíd stop in for some lunch and a beer while my clothes tumbled. Fast forward to about 11pm and a solid 3 or 4 pitchers of Humboldt Hemp Ale to my head and it was a bitter pill to see the launderette closed. Didnít even get my clothes to the dryer until the next day. Solid times.

5.99 6pk everyday at cork and bottle. the smell and taste of this really give me more of a brown ale feel. Really really lightly carbonated. Pours cool dark brown amber with hardly any head even if you pour it straight into the bottom of the glass. Malty nose, malty sweet front, not really any hop bite, watery mouth feel, drinkable i guess, but nothing too special.. bud is 4.99 a six pack, so I guess itís worth the extra buck. Iíd probably rather have it than newcastle, while weíre on the topic of brown ale. Is this style really called a "spice herb vegetable"? Is that how you say it? LOL
