Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions. (Editorís Note: originally brewed by the Humboldt Brewing Company until their acquisition by Firestone Walker)

Appearance: clear medium-dark brown, with pretty ruby-amber highlights and a short, fizzy light tan head. Aroma: caramel, molasses, graham cracker, star anise, and a surprisingly herbal undertone whiffing around. Taste: slightly sweet, a little nutty, with caramel, brown sugar, and a bitter, herbal note as forecast by the aroma. Finish: smooth, yet slightly zingy, with lingering brown toast, nuts, basil, and anise. Notes: Didnít really care for the herbal accents to this; guess I wasnít a fan of the hemp addition. Palate was a little watery, and the typical brown ale flavors were overly subdued.

Nice darker pour from a short stubby bottle. Choco malt aroma. Tries to be creamy but it goes into a bitter attitude soon after the session begins. Creamy malty, then bitter medicine. Yes, lots of personality in this brown ale. Could use a few manners. Not impressed, not sure what the hemp is sposed to do to this, canít detect its effects.

On tap at Firestone Walker Taproom, Buellton. A clear, dark brown beer with a small, off-white to light beige head. The aroma is lightly roasted, with caramel and some chocolate notes. Low on hoppy aromas and flavors, some bitterness though. Caramel, caramel malts and some chocolate and coffee hints. Medium body, soft carbonation, quite dry. Short finish. A bit boring, like most brown ales, not bad in any way though. 130809

Cool these are in NC now. Pours a clean and soft reddish brown with one finger of creamy cacao colored head. Nose is very nice, soft sweet malts with a nice caramel component and sweet biscuity background. Some earthy and lightly toasted grain as well. Nice raisiny, caramelly, bready sweet flavor. Dark round fruits with sweet malt and a hint of toasted grain. Medium bodied with a very light hop character and subtle carbonation.
