Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions.

A nice mahogany color with a thick head. Aroma is caramel and coffee. taste is a sharp soy sauce mixed in beer flavor with a bitter salty after taste. Basically it’s Guiness stout with a different label. I will finish the glass but not a fan.

Appearance was clear reddish brown with diminishing creamy tan tiny head,no lacing. Aromas are caramel, chocolate, hints of coffee and sugars. Taste are toffee, brown sugar, touches of coffee and vanilla. Palate was soft creamy CO2 with light body, then average length simple semi-sweet lightly dry finish. A average easy drinking brown.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a medium, well retained, light beige head, over a clear brown (SRM 25) body......nose is light with cocoa, chocolate, toffee/caramel, hints of coffee, no esters, minimal hops........taste is light cocoa, chocolate, hints of toffee/caramel, slight roasted coffee, minimal esters, light herbal hop bitterness to finish, dry throughout......mouth feel, light of medium body, no astringency, soft carbonation. This is a nice rendition of a Brown Ale, with pleasant complexity in both aroma and flavor. The malts are dominant in both aroma and flavor, which is entirely appropriate for Northern English Brown. 12oz bottle, dark brown pour, small thin head, little lacing. Light body, slightly sweet taste coming through, grain, thin feel, with a slight bitter finish. Lively co2. Decent overall.

Got at wine 101 in wf nc. Ok brown ale. Carmel taste is slightly to overpowering and give the beer a very sweet overall taste.

UPDATED: NOV 1, 2014 12 oz bottle dated 26 July 2012 served in a snifter. "Brewed and bottled by Nectar Ales" on the label. Pours clear, deep mahogany in color, with a large and durable tan head and excellent lacing (1st sample had a fragile and small head). Aroma; a mix of with caramel and toffee malts, with a hint of alcohol infused dark fruits and an off aroma that may indicate I left this in my refrigerator for too long. Flavor: hmm, a buttery (diacetyl?) component that is not entirely bad. Medium and dark roasted malt base. I believe I can taste the hemp seeds too; at least there’s an unusual nutty-herbal note. Slightly sweet until the balanced finish. Mild malty-toffee aftertaste. Feel: Very smooth, with excellent, soft medium carbonation. O: perhaps not at its best but likely not to exceed very good. (revisited with fresh bottle in Nov. 2014 -- rating upgraded)

Sweet, malty smell and malty taste. Taste isn’t very sweet and leaves something to be desired.
