3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Oh it looks like a brown ale that could come from my ancestral home of the North of England, but I doubt my ancestors would have contemplated adding hemp to their beer... they make ropes out if that donít they?
This beer is on the ruby side of brown with an off-white head that left sporadic spiderweb lace down the glass. A good niff of the aroma reveals something I wasnít expecting or was pleased to find. It smells of hydrochloric acid and partially digested food, In short, like newly chucked vomit. Faintly sweet and vegetal with chlorophyll on caramel. Mercifully, it took me a few niffs and some sips to draw this conclusion. Fortunately, it wasnít too late. This is a beer style that carries the hemp in a íyouíll love it or hate ití way. Equally fortunately, it does it fairly well. The finish is a balance of that brown ale nuttiness, the caramel and the green astringency of the hemp. Itís a beer of contrasts rather than harmony and worth trying at least once on that basis.
Is it worth trying twice? Not unless the next edition gives you some sort of dizzying high as well.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Humboldt Hemp Ale (Humboldt Brown) has a very thick, soapy, beige head, a straightforward brown appearance, with a bit of haze and some lacing left behind. The aroma is of overriding sweetness, medium-roasted barley malt, and itís pungent. Taste is of those elements, with a nice, noticeable, but not harsh, hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium and a tad slick, and Humboldt Hemp Ale finishes mostly dry, refreshing, and easy going. No alcohol detected. Also, I did not detect anything that I would associate with the hemp seeds. RJT

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle, unknown. Pours a medium cloudy brown, little to no tan head. Aroma rich and full, big, buttery and sickly sweet, brown sugar, candi sugar. Body lively and fluffy, finish slight and watery. Like this better on tap, bottle is pretty meh.

Murky Brown, Small Head That Did Not Last, Light Spotty Strings Of Lacing. Faint Toasted Malt Aroma. Lightly Toasted, Lightly Sweet, Light Bitter. Rather thin. Easy to drink but I did not get The Hemp part. Just OK. Pass It...

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Looks solid; a semi-transparent amberish-brown with sticky off-white lacing. Smells and tastes of dark malt with a light tastiness and mild nuttiness. Average on the palate. Okay, but a little thin and light for the style

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
A delicious aroma of chocolate, malt, and a slight tinge of mint. An appearance of dark brown the taste is overwhelming with malt, chocolate, and a small under currant of honey. The carbonation doesnít take away from the over all experience. A wonderful brown ale, delightful and refreshing.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Clear brown pour with a large, foamy tan head. Very malty aroma, with caramel and leaves. Nutty, sweet flavor with a funky bitter finish from the hemp seeds. Sticky texture with average carbonation. Light to medium bodied. Unique, but doesnít measure up to the other hemp ale I regularly have.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
12 oz bottle. Brown appearance with a small, light tan head, mostly dissipating, moderate lacing. Aroma of dark malts, bitter chocolate, earth, mild hops, light herbs and toffee. Similar flavor with notes of bread, caramel, toasted malts and a light roast. Medium body with a crisp feel and a semi-dry, lingering finish.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Dark, almost porterlike appearance. The hemp gives it an earthy flavor, like chewing on a rope or a piece of straw. Fairly sweet, not a lot of hops or roasted malt. Light bodied. A little gimmicky and not the most well made brown ale.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 4/16/2013. Pours slightly cloudy deep reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, biscuit, light chocolate, light nuttiness, herbal, floral, and toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark malt and light hop/hemp notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, brown sugar, light chocolate, light nuttiness, herbal, floral, and toasted earthiness. Minimal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, brown sugar, light chocolate, light nuttiness, herbal, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a bit. Nice balance and robustness of dark malt flavors with light hop/hemp presence; with no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy and smooth mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice brown ale. Good balance and robustness of dark malt flavors and very smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.
