Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions.

12oz bottle. Poured a deeper ruby red/brownish color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, chocolate, nuts, and a wet grassy/earthiness. Tastes of chocolate, nuts, and earthy. Thinner body. Didn’t really get a ’spice/herb/vegatable’ out of it.

Bottle… Dark, clear crimson ale with a small, creamy, khaki head. Decent retention. Subdued, malty nose provides subtle notes of chocolate, nuts and vanilla. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. Well-balanced flavor offers traces of chocolate and nuts. Short, crisp, clean finish. Brown ale, I think.

UPDATED: MAR 15, 2014 Blind tasting @ home. Hazy deep reddish orange appearance with a light brown head. Slightly oxidized / cardboard, burnt sugar / caramel / molasses, pear / apple nose. Moderately to highly sweet. Earthy / herbal bitterness. Chalky / dusty grainy. Dull mouth feel. Some acidity. Not all that great.

Spicy, mildly hoppy brown. I guess this recipe was inherited by FW and it isn’t one of their better beers.

Sample at Burger Bar at Mandalay Bay. Pours a dark ruby-brown color with a medium light beige head that diminishes steadily. Small patches of lacing. Aroma of caramel and malt. Light to medium body with flavors of caramel malt, cocoa and slight hops. The finish is short with an earthy malt aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.

Tap at ChurchKey. Into nonic pint, the pour is a cola ruby with a small, tan head. Small lacing. Aroma is sweet, roast, milk chocolate, muted character overall. Taste is cherry, roast, milk chocolate. A decent, light porter. A little heavy and rich for brown ale.

Bottle sample at a tasting at kerenmk’s place. Thanks kerenmk. Clear brown with a beige head. Aroma of chocolate with nuts and a bit of toastiness. Sweet malty flavor with nuts, caramel, a bit of toastiness, a bit of chocolate, some herbal notes and a bit of metal hints. Medium-bodied. So-so

20oz pint on tap at Cock & Bull in Hyde Park, for $6.75. Clear dark red / slightly brown color. Thin khaki head retains on the surface. Leaves decent bits of lace. Medium-plus body. Smooth, crisp, lighter carbonation. Lightly dry in the finish. Good toasty, slightly nutty malt profile. Kind of spicy hop, good amount for a brown ale. Bit of herbal, earthy, hemp-type flavors here, hint of chocolate. Moderate sweet taste, light bitter. Solid, kind of spicy-hoppy brown ale.

Tap at the Yardhouse. Deep amber-brown beer, creamy thick white head. Aroma is very nutty and sweet. Soft brown/toasty malt base. A rich sweet toasted nut base. Fairly clean though with a nice soft sweetness. Fresh maltiness with a nice soft sweetness. Fresh maltiness and a light toasted malt base. It’s actually a pretty nice beer... it just isn’t really my style.

Highly disappointing. Pours dark brown/black with off white head, aroma is some chocolate and roasted notes with a bit of resiny hops. Taste is resiny hops up front with some chocolate and coffee ending roasted and bitter. Not at all hemp-like, with more porter like qualities.
