COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions. (Editorís Note: originally brewed by the Humboldt Brewing Company until their acquisition by Firestone Walker)

Horribly underwhelming in most respects. It pours a ruby red and magenta color with a white and slightly opaque head that dissipated very quickly. The aroma is filled with malts, almonds, cherries, cranberry, and something rustic. The body is very juice-like and light with a heavy cranberry and syrupy malty finish. I feel like i just swallowed a glass of boysenberry syrup or ate some pancakes. I'm not quite getting any hemp flavor, just more malt than anything. A strange acetic bitter maltiness is all thats truly out of the ordinary. Medium carbonation, and light mouthfeel...not very appealing other than as an "i tried it..". Next please....

Tap: Never had hemp so Iím not sure what it tastes like, but I was having trouble guessing the style of this. The color is a rich brown. Just slightly darker than the Rogue Hazelnut Brown ale next to it. Aroma was malt dominated with caramel, light chocolate. I really donít know what they were trying here, but it didnít work.

Better then I thought it would be, smooth hoppy ale, goes well with alfredo sauce. Great for that burn out college kid you know, although I tasted no hemp.

UPDATED: MAY 31, 2007 Poured a nice rich mahogany color with plenty of brown highlights. The head was thick and off-white, receded slowly and left spotty lacing. The aroma was lacking, with herbal notes and faint spice. The flavor was a blend of spicy malt and sweet floral hops with a bizarre, herbal finish that had a slightly oily mouthfeel (edit: Early Grey tea is the flavor I was tasting that I couldnít quite put my finger on earlier). I donít know if I actually tasted hemp on the finish or if I simply wanted to taste hemp on the finish, but right there at the end, there was a little something.

clear dark brown, short lived fine beige head still manages to leave a bit of lace, sweet nutty chocolate aroma with earthy hops, well balanced malt flavor with nice chocolate and mild bitterness, a typical brown ale

5.99 6pk everyday at cork and bottle. the smell and taste of this really give me more of a brown ale feel. Really really lightly carbonated. Pours cool dark brown amber with hardly any head even if you pour it straight into the bottom of the glass. Malty nose, malty sweet front, not really any hop bite, watery mouth feel, drinkable i guess, but nothing too special.. bud is 4.99 a six pack, so I guess itís worth the extra buck. Iíd probably rather have it than newcastle, while weíre on the topic of brown ale. Is this style really called a "spice herb vegetable"? Is that how you say it? LOL

Iíll rate this for historical purposes. One of the gateway craft beers, along with Red Tail and Arrogant Bastard, back in the day. Used to go through a couple pitchers of this at a time at the Tilted Stick because Chip had a tough time giving this stuff away because it was too different at the time. I flocked to it.

There was that time I put my clothes in the wash at the launderette next door to the Stick and decided Iíd stop in for some lunch and a beer while my clothes tumbled. Fast forward to about 11pm and a solid 3 or 4 pitchers of Humboldt Hemp Ale to my head and it was a bitter pill to see the launderette closed. Didnít even get my clothes to the dryer until the next day. Solid times.

Bottle from the Beer Fest in Davis, CA.Poured a copper color with an off-white head. Not spectacular about this one. Sweet malty flavor with a slighty metallic aftertaste. I did notice a little bit of the spicy flavor. Not bad, but nothing I would buy again.

Serving: Draft at Fireworks. It pours a tea like color with a frothy, off white head. Poor head retention and little to no lacing left. The nose is light with notes of nuts, caramel, and slight herbal notes. The flavor is light bordering on tasteless with notes of caramel, a little earth, some herbals, and nuts. Light to medium body with medium to high, over agressive carbonation and a short finish. This one comes across almost as a palate cleasner. Not impressed. Skip it.
