COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Boasting a ruby hue and an exquisite floral aroma, Red Nectar is a robust yet elegant brew with distinctive accents of toasted malt, caramel, spice and residual sweetness. The beer that started it all… Red Nectar was considered a strange bird when it was first released in 1987. After all, where did a robust, handcrafted all-natural amber ale fit into the massive flock of American industrial lagers? Answer: it didn’t. So it blazed its own trail, helping set the pace for the craft brew revolution. Enjoy Red Nectar for its dazzling reddish copper hue, original flavors and caramel spice accents. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by Humboldt Brewing Company as "Humboldt Red Nectar Ale" until their acquisition by Firestone Walker.)

Very strange that I had samples in three different tasting and had a slightly different opinion each time. Didn't care for it at first and next time thought it was a clear winner. Perhaps a bad bottle first time? At any rate, has a nice body with good maltiness and clean bitter finish.

My nose is stuffed up today, but this is a nice florally hoppy red ale, with a nice hue. Don't know what happened to the Humboldt name, but this is marketed as a "Nectar Ales" product now ... interesting. Anyway, this is sweet yet bitter, with a slight malty tone. Very nice beer.

UPDATED: MAY 8, 2004 Appearance is certainly appropriate, that is being reddish and all. Good roasted sweet maltiness, some bitterness, clean finish. Not great, but quite enjoyable.

Bottle. Reddish/brown color with a good off-whiter head. Malty aroma with a little pine. Flavor has more hops than I thought. A little acidity and a little roastiness/nuttiness. There's a slight astringincey in the beer that isn't quite so smooth, but it's still easy to drink.

Nice and sweet with a smooth malty flavor. I could detect hints of caramel, cherries and apples. Overall very smooth and crisp.

A red or amber beer with a fine beige head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of straws, caramel, and hints of roasted bread. The flavor is of roasted malt and good hops - both aroma and bitter - with fruit and caramel notes in the middle. It ends on an OK bitterness. The body is a little thin.

Deep amber color with tan head. Head dissipates quickly. A nutty aroma. Flavor is hoppy but not bitter. Very smooth session beer.

This was a pretty decent beer. Poured a nice dark amber and was moderately hoppy. This would make a nice session beer in both taste and alcohol content.

Tinted sanguine color with dispersing light tan head. Aroma is nutty with a slight bit of grapefruit and plum. A bit floral too. Flavor is subdued yet luscious slightly husky maltiness with some grapenuts and honey. More light fruity notes, sweet; yes, I think the adage fits this beer very well. Soft, wispy palate with mild bitterness--a bit disconcertingly dry after the sweet body. Unique for the 'style' and quite subtle.
