2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 Ernest (5627) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 12, 2013
Bottle.
Head is initially small, frothy/fizzy, off-white, mostly diminishing.
Body is hazy dark yellow.
Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain), lightly hoppy (herbs), with notes of sour fruit (kumquat, unripe peach, etc.) and diacetyl.
Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter, unclean.
Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation.
Unfortunately yet another brewery with an (occasional? frequent?) diacetyl problem. Other reviews here show this beer (and others as well) is hit-and-miss in that regard. Mike and Jeff got lucky last year, but I struck out this time. Sour and dirty and butterscotchy, this was a complete drain pour. Weiherer is similar in that sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you get utter dreck. Probably just because they don’t always follow procedures to the letter every single batch (the sourness in this sample alongside the butter seems to suggest a pedio infection).
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 TAR (2346) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - APR 17, 2013
Fresh bottle purchased and consumed at Brauerei Neder, Nov. 2012: Speckled pumpkin yellow. Thin, pasty white foam. Delightful nose of fresh, clean, and dusty malt swirled with flowers, lemon, and orange marmalade-kissed just-baked biscuit. Soft, natural weightlessness to the carbonation. Zesty herbaceous hop bitterness is sandwiched by juicy floral hop echoes and a dry, understated toastiness. Dabs of orange marmalade generate a candylike effect which dovetails with the divine lip-smacking hoppy nectars. "Dusty" house character adorns the boastfully succulent and cleanly extracted malt. Slick fruitiness provides pleasant contrast to the appetizing interplay of minerals and peppery hops. Concludes with dry toasted bread along with a zing of alcohol and spicy hops. A very lovely kellerbier with rustic charm and plenty of nuance to hold one’s interest.

bottle at the brewery in Forchheim. so what we have is a very smoky brauerei hall and the keller bier only available in bottles, so thinking "ok let’s tick it and get out of here". the ratings don’t look that high anyway, and bottle keller bier tends to suffer. instead this one was magically juicy and full of both malt and hop expression: spice and apricot nectar hop aroma and flavor, matched bitterness to the sweetish pale malt, with a soft doughy layer of which rounds out the edges. great comfort in the malt texture and carbonation, both very soft. toasted cereals, lemon juice, cheese rind, grassy / green wet hop character, very surprising to find a 4.0+ bottled keller bier. great shape during my visit.

My bottle 5.2% abv, marked 1.9.2012. Sweet sweet nose reminds me startlingly of yellow vanilla cake mix and icing. Orange body with a white head. Semi-sweet taste with a low strain of bitterness, there’s some good quenching malt here with light cracker, faint herbal and grassy tones. Crisp light-medium body, lovely swirls of malt layers to tongue through. Super repeatable. Talk about a beer that confounded expectations!
