chris_o (4405), London, Greater London, England Jun 12, 2005 Nelson beers can be rather hit and miss, but I’ve no complaints about this one. Very warming, as one might expect. Lots of juicy, raisiny fruit. Starts rather sweet, but there are plenty of tangy, resinous hops coming through to provide the necessary balance and cut through the sweet richness. As Silk Tork remarks, there’s also a woodiness and a touch of lactic sourness on the finish. A beer that’s difficult to categorise but easy to like. Just the alcoholic afterburn detracts a little. SilkTork (3853), Rochester, Kent, England Mar 23, 2004 Frog & Toad, Gillingham. Dark mahogany with auburn fringes - mixed bubble and foam ring with wispy strands across the top. Alcohol is very evident in a bold almost harsh manner. Some aniseed and licorice in the flavour. Some raisin sweetness, but that is dominated by a woody bitterness. Too strong for an English Strong Ale, not sweet enough for a Barley Wine, this best fits as a Winter Warmer. percyj (3), England does not count Feb 16, 2004 A good, strong winter ale, very drinkable, despite its strength. First tried this at The Three Daws in Gravesend, who keep thier beer amazingly well.
