500ml flip-top bottle - After having this one back to back with Paulanerís Salvatore, this one was just as tasty and Iím betting in a blind tasting many people would be quite surprised. A semi-sweet malty aroma, almost like smelling malt syrup, a bit of honey, and candied walnuts. Flavor has some nice sweetness to it, a little boozy actually, caramel malts, a little nutty and very smooth. As I said, it stood up quite nicely to Salvatore. Good stuff.

"of the red and doppelbock, i was expecting this to be better, but itís a pretty weak representation of the style. less liquid bread...more overripe sweet, especially the aftertaste. if not for that it would an above avg taste, but the aftershock ruins it a bit. everything else is average. itís not BAD but itís a 1 dimensional doppelbock light. sucks that itís bring down my scores for a style i REALLY like when done well."

March 2nd, 2012 - Of all the beers Trader Joeís could choose to put on its very limited shelf space, I am surprised it gives so little to beers who give so little to consumers. There are exceptions, of course. Here in San Diego, Trader Joeís fields such celebrities as Unibroue, and some more local stuff. But the beers from Neroís are neither local nor especially good. Is it because Italian, and someone can buy an Italian beer to go with their Italian wine for Italian night? Is the appeal of the long-necked bottle too quaint not to pass up? Iím uncertain, but every time I encourage myself to try one of these beers on the off chance that this time will be different, it never is. The label promises a ďdouble dark malt aleĒ which hints at something deep, dark, viscous, and maybe even sweet. Not so in the least. Both nose and taste are pallid, weak and wan, with a light, restrained flavor thatís more like a slightly nutty light brown ale than anything else. The aftertaste has light grains and touches in the same weight class as a wheat beer, but without the figure for it.

Hazy deep golden pour with a thin off white creamy head and light sticky lacing ..... aroma of grainy malts, caramel malts and some earthy qualities ... taste is of caramel malts, toasted malts, grainy earthy hops and a little sweetness .... real simple brew and the abv is hidden real well

Bottle. Wheat and malt aroma, cloudy brown, white head, medium carbonation, long syrup finish, after taste is like mineral water. Pretty good but Italy has got better stuff.

Thin palate. Bock aroma with caramel and a dy malt flavor with alcohol. Thin palate.

A sickly copper brew with a long lasting off white head. Sweet peaches and malt are up front in the smell. There is also abc gum and a little bit of old wood. This tastes like sweetened peaches covered in brandy. There is also some toffee in the finish. Notes of wood come through in each drink. A decent brew, but itís an odd combination of sweet and dry.

Bottled. Poured medium orange with a tall whitish head. The aroma picked up sweet caramel and dark fruity notes with black pepper and detergenty accents.. more of the latter as it warmed up. The flavor found sweet caramel, nutty notes, and dark fruit at the core with tangy fruit skins and clovey/white peppery yeast around.. tasty, sweet finish. Medium-bodied with an ok flow through the palate.. decent drinker.

500ml bottle from Trader Joes Bakersfield. Nose is ripe bananas, sweet caramel, and a hint of molasses. Clear redwood brown with a medium, heavy lacing, beige head. Flavor is slightly sweet with moderate molasses. Actually a good dopplebock for 1.99.

Banana and graham cracker nose, some plastic notes. Cloudy copper, thin head. Caramel dominated flavor with apple and berry accents. Not tart. A bit chemical. Light body, fizzy. Kind of cheap, but not awful.
