COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dunks Ferry Dunkelweizen – We stay with the German wheat beer theme for our Fall seasonal. Much like it’s Summertime brother, Dunks Ferry Dunkelweizen has a unique banana and spicy clove character but this time paired with a chewy, bready (dare we say banana bread) malt backbone. Again, we hop this German wheat beer with Hallertau and Tettnanger hops. 5.2% ABV.

Undated large bottle.
Glass: Duvel tulip.
Appearance: Lightly hazed vibrant red/copper with a tall rocky tan head that’s dense and persistent.
Aroma: Caramel malts and banana are prominent with doughy malts and chalky yeast presence. Not bad but not great.
Taste: Much like the aroma, but less chalky and less doughy. Caramel and banana are balanced and well done. Mild clove finish that becomes prominent when lingering.
Palate: Medium bodied, highly carbonated.
Overall: Solid beer in a style that needs more attention. Not perfect, but good and worth buying.

Pours a nutty brown with a huge tan foamy head. Almost no aroma. Taste is very watery. Maybe a hint of spice. Not much going on here....I lived on Dunks Ferry Rd. Near Neshaminy. Thought I’d try the beer because it caught my eye.

Drank from a pint glass poured from a twenty two ounce bottle. Aromas of roasted malts and bread. Nice dark orangey amber color with nice thick fluffy beige head. Taste of bread and sweet malts with a hint of banannas and spices. First beer from Neshaminy Creek, nothing amazing but worth the try. As for being a dunkelweizen it is average.

Transfer from BA review on 6-20-13- Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance- Served a hazy chestnut-brown color brew with a tiny white head. The head fades fast to leave only a trace of white foam floating atop the brew. Smell – Overall the aroma is rather light. The aroma is heaviest of a banana mixed with some caramel. Along with these smells is a little bit of wheat and some aromas of yeast. Taste - The taste begins with a sweeter wheat dark brown bread flavor. There is a good level of caramel sweetness upfront mixed with a little bit of a more dark fruit sweetness. As the flavor moves forward, flavors of lighter fruits consisting of banana and orange come to the tongue. More yeastiness and some spice develop in the taste at this time with a bit of a cola flavor developing more toward the end. In the end a rather sweet and moderately spiced darker wheaty flavor is left to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is on the medium to slightly chewier side with a carbonation level that is rather average. Overall – Not a bad dunkel and quite easy drinking. Fairly tasty and well worth a try.

22oz bomber shared by JohnGonk after work. Poured a hazy amber color with a small creamy off white head. Aroma and taste are much the same. Bread crust, toasted grain, wheat, and banana. Taste has a slight sour bitterness in the finish.

Has a bitter after taste. Needs a bit more sweetness to it. I finished my pint, but will choose another NCBC brew to drink next.

This is an unusual but interesting dunkelweizen unlike any Bavarian version I’ve tried. It has all of the usual fruity esters and caramel malts but the hops and roasted malt give it a burnt wood finish that lingers on the palate. I really like this interpretation of the style and have consumed several cases over the past year. It does not replace the original German dark wheat beers, but it is a welcome change of pace for someone like me who cherishes the dunkelweizen style.

Hazed brown pour with creamy white head and lace. Aroma of brown sugar and wheat. Light brown sugar and wheat with a papery bitter. Light bodied and a bit fizzy for me.

Bottle. Pours a clear brown body under a small fizzy off-white head that faded quickly to a thin ring. The nose is pretty decent, some over-ripe bananas, a touch of chocolate, dark wheat, and a hint of bubblegum. The flavor falls a bit flat though, the malt backbone is a little too thin and it’s too heavily filtered, leaving it lacking in fullness and softness. The fruity esters are there, but light, mostly banana. I’m missing the heavy yeastiness that I think should be in a good Dunkelweizen. Fizzy prickly carbonation and a short slightly watery finish. Meh, wish this weren’t so filtered, and it could use a boost in the malt bill as well.
