22oz bomber shared by JohnGonk after work. Poured a hazy amber color with a small creamy off white head. Aroma and taste are much the same. Bread crust, toasted grain, wheat, and banana. Taste has a slight sour bitterness in the finish.

Has a bitter after taste. Needs a bit more sweetness to it. I finished my pint, but will choose another NCBC brew to drink next.

This is an unusual but interesting dunkelweizen unlike any Bavarian version I’ve tried. It has all of the usual fruity esters and caramel malts but the hops and roasted malt give it a burnt wood finish that lingers on the palate. I really like this interpretation of the style and have consumed several cases over the past year. It does not replace the original German dark wheat beers, but it is a welcome change of pace for someone like me who cherishes the dunkelweizen style.

Hazed brown pour with creamy white head and lace. Aroma of brown sugar and wheat. Light brown sugar and wheat with a papery bitter. Light bodied and a bit fizzy for me.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours a clear brown body under a small fizzy off-white head that faded quickly to a thin ring. The nose is pretty decent, some over-ripe bananas, a touch of chocolate, dark wheat, and a hint of bubblegum. The flavor falls a bit flat though, the malt backbone is a little too thin and it’s too heavily filtered, leaving it lacking in fullness and softness. The fruity esters are there, but light, mostly banana. I’m missing the heavy yeastiness that I think should be in a good Dunkelweizen. Fizzy prickly carbonation and a short slightly watery finish. Meh, wish this weren’t so filtered, and it could use a boost in the malt bill as well.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Location: 22 oz bottle from Sparrow, 2/7/14
Aroma: Has an aroma of sweet malts, wheat, some fruit, and spice/clove
Appearance: Pours a murky brown-orangish color with a small head
Flavor: The taste leans quite sweet and wheaty as well, with some spice for balance
Palate: The body is medium, with an average carbonation, and a sticky finish
Thought this was a pretty solid dunkel. It certainly does what it sets out to do. Nice stuff.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bomber. Nose strongly phenolic (really heavy clove) backed by boozy, jammy red fruit and some acetone, along with strong fruity esters (not as much banana, but it’s here, too; my sensors are notably busted in this area) -- reminds of those shocking freeze-distilled Schorschbräu offerings found in clay bottles, just that jammy, sort of out of control. Hazy, deep dark amber-copper with an ugly soapy beige head. Taste is strongly sweet but not cloying with light-medium bitterness, streaky booze and slow warmth, some caramel but more really sweet and pure Munich with lesser rye/pump bread notes. A touch smoky, even, but that in the absence of the others that were expected. Full body with avg carbonation. A lot of obvious flaws here, definitely not one for introducing a neophyte to style, but would be fine as he third or fourth of the night.
